Editorial: The future comes slowly, but revolutions are worth waiting for

Editorial The future comes slowly, but revolutions are worth waiting for

During a trip to Switzerland, my family started off on a day hike to reach the nearby foothills of a mountain. It looked doable, but as time passed the range seemed to recede before our approach. After many hours we turned around, having apparently failed to close any distance.

Crossing from now to the future in technology can likewise seem illusory. When we scrutinize and celebrate each tiny incremental invention as if it were a milestone, we lose track of time as if we were counting grains of sand dropping through an hourglass. Game-changing inventions are rare, separated by epochs in which progress adds up to a lot of sameness. Futurism is an unforgiving business. But sometimes, as in the cases of cloud computing and media convergence, redemption comes with patience.

Evangelist Billy Graham hospitalized with bronchial infection

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Christian evangelist Billy Graham was admitted overnight to a hospital near his North Carolina home and treated for a pulmonary infection thought to be bronchitis, the hospital said on Sunday.

The 93-year-old evangelist is in stable condition and is "resting comfortably," Mission Hospital And Graham's spokesman A. Larry Ross said in a statement.

"He's alert, vibrant, no fever, sitting up, watching television, eating his meals and in good spirits," Ross said in a telephone interview.

Graham came down with a slight temperature on Saturday evening. He was expected to remain in the hospital for several days, Ross said.

Billy Graham is among the most influential U.S. religious leaders of the 20th century, having prayed with every president since Harry Truman. Obama visited Billy Graham at his North Carolina home in 2010.

Gas prices rise; officials wait to enter refinery

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A fire at one of the nation's largest oil refineries helped push West Coast gas prices close to $4 a gallon Thursday, as the same federal team that investigated the Gulf Coast spill waited to inspect the unit that was knocked out by the blaze.

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board team was standing by with state and company inspectors to do structural and environmental tests to see if it was safe to enter the unit and determine when production might resume after the Monday night blaze.

In all, five separate investigations will be done.

"This is an important accident in its own right, it was a large fire and has the potential to affect fuel supplies and prices," said Dr. Daniel Horowitz, a member of the chemical board.

The average price of regular gasoline jumped in California from $3.86 a gallon on Tuesday to $3.94 on Thursday, according to the website GasBuddy.com.

Some experts expect the disruption in production to last for weeks and push prices beyond $4 a gallon.

"It'll depend on Chevron getting their facility repaired," said Patrick DeHaan of GasBuddy.com. "The increases will be felt in California, Oregon and Washington, with perhaps some residual issues in Arizona and other nearby states."

The Richmond refinery produces 16 percent of the region's daily gasoline supply. The fire knocked out a unit that makes a specialized blend of cleaner burning gasoline that satisfies air quality laws in California, Oregon and Washington.

Sean Comey, a spokesman for Chevron, said myriad factors were pushing gas prices higher, not just the loss of one unit at the refinery.

"There are a variety of economic conditions like rising crude and ethanol costs, which also affect what consumers pay at the pump," he said.

Comey said the refinery continues to produce gasoline, diesel and jet fuel but in reduced amounts.

Experts said inventories of the cleaner burning gas already were low. With the refinery's output in question for what could be weeks, analysts say prices could reach $4 a gallon as soon as Friday.

"California has the cleanest burning gas in the nation, so this is definitely a market disruption," said Rayola Dougher, a senior economic adviser with the American Petroleum Institute.

California can't replace those supplies with imports from Washington state, Asia and the Gulf Coast, so it's more difficult to ease the impact of the lost production, Dougher said.

Some analysts believe other refineries in California could make up for the shortfall, if Chevron's capacity remains limited by the fire.

Tradition Energy analyst Addison Armstrong said California refineries have been producing about 6 million barrels a week, down from 7 million a week last month.

"That should be enough capacity to make up for the loss of output from Richmond," he said.

Comey said Chevron could not estimate when the damaged unit would be back online. The company also said it did not know when investigators would have access to the site.

Still, government investigators expected testing to be completed Friday.

Once the unit is open to inspectors, the process of determining the cause of the vapor leak that led to the towering fire can start. Then, after evidence is collected, Chevron can begin getting the unit back up and running.

Horowitz said investigators will also be evaluating Chevron's emergency response system and other concerns raised by the community.

Hundreds of people contacted attorneys and were expected to file claims against Chevron for breathing problems and other health issues stemming from the thick black smoke that spewed from the facility during the fire.

The company has set up a compensation funds and distributed phone numbers that can be used to file claims. The initial phone lines were overwhelmed by callers, and the company said it was arranging help to meet the demand.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District originally said air samples taken during Monday's fire showed that toxic air contaminants were below levels considered unhealthy by federal officials.

The district said Thursday that its "initial statement was incorrect." In one of eight samples taken throughout Richmond, levels of the toxic compound acrolein were above the federal health standard.

Air district officials said the refinery fire generated smoke containing particulate matter that was the likely source of health complaints by Richmond residents.

Heraeus refutes DuPont patent infringement claim - Solar - Recharge

Heraeus refutes DuPont patent infringement claimA solar cell with DuPont photovoltaic metallization paste.

Heraeus Materials Technology believes its products do not infringe on patents issued by DuPont, as the materials giant has alleged in recent lawsuits.

The German provider of solar metallization pastes also calls questions the validity of the patents at issue, noting that certain claims of DuPont's US patents (8,158,504 and 7,767,254) were rejected by authorities in Europe, China and Japan.

"Heraeus believes DuPont?s patent lawsuits seek to achieve through legal means what they cannot achieve through product performance and customer service," the company says in a statement. "Heraeus also believes they are attempting to improperly influence competition in the marketplace by threatening customers and competitors with potential legal action."

DuPont named SolarWorld in its recently filed lawsuit over the '504 patent.

The complaint alleges that Heraeus' H92XX and/or H94XX frontside silver photovoltaic pastes, which it has supplied to SolarWorld for use in the manufacture of PV cells, infringes on at least four claims of the DuPont patent.

Heraeus is unmoved by the complaint.

"We stand behind our innovative products and we will continue to produce our paste products at sites worldwide and supply them to our customers without making misleading statements or threats to our competitors," says Andy London, global manager of Heraeus PV business, in a statement.

    Trade stance

Meanwhile, Heraeus has come out against duties sought by SolarWorld and other manufacturers on Chinese PV imports into the US and Europe.

"Heraeus has always supported preserving free trade without protectionist government intervention. In this instance as well, we regard the attempt to impose import duties on solar modules made in China as clearly interfering with the rules of free competition," says Dr. Frank Heinricht, Heraeus Holding chairman, in a statement.

Health News - NIH seeks proposals to study genomic sequencing in ...

Funding intended to spur information on implications, potential of new technology

The National Institutes of Health is seeking proposals for research projects on the implications of information obtained from sequencing the genome to identify diseases in newborns. The intent of funding such projects is to further the understanding of disorders that appear during the newborn period and to improve treatments for these diseases.

Whole genome sequencing is a laboratory method that can determine the entire DNA sequence of a person's genetic material, or genome, from a DNA sample. In recent years, genomic technologies have advanced sufficiently so that it may be possible to use individuals' whole genome information to enhance medical care, including the care and treatment of newborns.

According to the funding announcement, the NIH is seeking proposals "to explore the implications, challenges, and opportunities associated with the possible use of genomic sequence information in the newborn period."

"The use of expanded genomic information has the potential to significantly impact newborn screening in both the clinical and public health setting and benefit numerous infants and children. However, it is vital that the use of genomic technology in newborns is explored in a thoughtful manner by teams of scientists who develop technology, treat children, and examine the ethical, legal and societal implications of implementing such programs.? said Tiina Urv, Ph.D., of the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Branch of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

"DNA-based testing is currently used to confirm diagnoses for some newborn conditions," said Anastasia Wise, Ph.D., Epidemiologist, Office of Population Genomics, NHGRI. "Pilot studies funded under this program will be useful to determine whether or not having genome sequence information contributes to improved clinical care of newborns."

The five-year program will be co-funded by the NICHD and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), both part of NIH.

This program will sponsor research projects that bring together teams of researchers with expertise in the following areas:

    • Genomic sequencing and analysis of genomic sequence information. Applying knowledge gained from genomic sequencing to patient care.
    • Exploring the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic information.

Researchers will be asked to answer one or more of the following research questions:

    • For disorders currently screened for in newborns, how can genomic sequencing replicate or add to known newborn screening testing?
    • What knowledge could genomic sequencing of newborns provide about conditions not currently screened for in newborns?
    • What additional information could be learned from genomic sequencing that is relevant to the clinical care of newborns?

Officials at the NICHD and the NHGRI developed this initiative based on the advice of experts who attended a workshop to develop a research agenda on the potential application of genomic technology to newborn screening. (A summary of the workshop can be found here: http://www.nichd.nih.gov/about/meetings/2010/121410.cfm) The institutes currently plan to commit an estimated total of $25 million to the program over 5 years.

Lately on Fridays, we?ve been getting you into the weekend mindset by highlighting the best of the city?s food truck desserts. Any discussion of the best NY food truck desserts has to include Sweetery NYC, who do a lot of things well, but especially baked goods.

We brought home an assortment of cookies to enjoy with our family ? and enjoy them we did. Our goodie bag included a snickerdoodle ($2), flourless chocolate walnut ($2.25) and a macarella ($3).

NY Food Truck Dessert: Cookies & Ice Cream Cupcakes From Sweetery NYC You can?t tell from the photo, but take our word for it, these were big cookies. We didn?t measure, but they had to be 5-6 inches wide each.

The flourless chocolate walnut cookie was exactly as advertised, nutty and chocolatey. The lack of flour made the cookie denser and less ?cakey?, although I wouldn?t call it heavy.

Snickerdoodle is always high on our list, being big fans of cinnamon. The cookie was soft and tasty, with a nice dose of cinnamon sugar dusting the top. Yum!

The macarella is one of the most popular items on Sweetery?s menu. It?s the most expensive cookie at $3, but is actually two coconut macaroon cookies sandwiched around nutella cream. The toasted coconut flavor is really nice, and it?s an inspired choice to pair this with nutella, a chocolate hazelnut cream.

The Sweetery truck spends most mornings on Hudson St just below Houston St, in front of the Saatchi & Saatchi building. They were the first truck to park in this area a couple a years ago, which is now a hotbed for food trucks.

Some days they hit different areas of Manhattan for lunch. To be sure, check their Twitter here or our Mobile Munchies Twitter feed.

In addition to cookies, they have delicious ice cream sandwiches on fresh baked cookies, cupcakes, brownies, whoopie pies and more. You can see their full menu here.

Get Flood Insurance Before You Need It - Health & Safety - Law and ...

The best time to get protection against a flood is before it happens. That means if you keep anything in a basement or live on the ground floor, it's important to have flood insurance.

Floods are the most common natural disaster and they can cause significant damage.

Buying flood insurance is always a good idea but in some cases it's also mandatory. It's important to understand how and when to buy flood insurance so that you're prepared before disaster strikes.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency administers the National Flood Insurance Program which is generally a good place to start.

Under federal law, homes with a federally regulated mortgage must have flood insurance if located within a Special Flood Hazard Area. Even if your home is not within a SFHA, banks may require that you have flood insurance before approving a mortgage.

Homeowner's insurance policies don't cover flooding. If you want to protect yourself, you need separate insurance.

Because of the potentially high cost of flood damage, the NFIP provides subsidized insurance to homeowners in many communities. If your area isn't covered, insurance is available through private companies.

Just because you've purchased flood insurance, doesn't mean everything is covered.

Protect yourself early because flood insurance coverage doesn't kick in until 30 days after the policy is purchased. If you wait until the flood warnings arrive your policy may not pay out.

Most flood insurance policies limit eligibility if the homeowner didn't protect themself from damage. If there is water or mold damage that you should have prevented, the insurance company may not pay out.

There are other common limitations to flood insurance so it's important to check your policy thoroughly.

If there is a flood and your insurance provider is unwilling to pay for covered damage, don't let them get away with it. Get help from an experienced lawyer and make your provider honor the policy terms.

A flood can cause significant damage but with proper protection it doesn't have to be devastating. Purchase insurance now to protect yourself in the future.
