Burner (for iPhone)

By Sara Yin

Cops, drug dealers, or people in my category?diehard fans of the hit TV show The Wire?will be familiar with the term "burner." Burners are cheap, prepaid phones often used to arrange drug sales and similar crimes, and are then "burned" or disposed of immediately to avoid police wiretaps and tracers.

Similarly, the Burner iPhone app, starting at $1.99 for one phone number, assigns a disposable phone numbers that you can instantly trash when you're done. It still runs calls and texts over your existing mobile network, so Burner won't actually help you hide from law enforcement, but it will mask your real number from your average creeper in places like Craigslist and online dating sites.

How Does Burner Work?
Burner buys phone numbers from Twilio, a startup that makes an API for voice communications. All Burner does is bridge your existing number and cell phone service to the assigned number. I asked CEO Greg Cohn of Ad Hoc Labs, which made the app, how quickly numbers get recycled, and he said the company is still in the process of figuring that out. At press time, about week after the app was released, Burner hadn't recycled any numbers yet.?

The calls and texts from your burner number still run over your own, unencrypted mobile network. Privacy-conscious folks would do better to turn to encrypted texting and calling apps like TrustCall and Gliph (neither of which have been reviewed by PCMag).?

As you can imagine, the possible uses for an anonymous number are endless. Burner's PR pitch includes innocent use-cases like going on online dating sites, Craigslist, job searches, Meetups, and social networking shoutouts. The less innocent can think of plenty more uses, but be aware that Burner's Terms of Agreement clearly state that you can't use the app to call 911 or for any illegal activities.

Let's Burn Something
Burner is incredibly easy to use. I set up my first burner by entering my real number into the app, then a confirmation code that was texted to me, and tapping a button. Burner let me customize my area code and then immediately generated a number, which I labeled "Craigslist."

Numbers are bought and extended with credits. A single burner costs three credits, or $1.99, and gives you 20 minutes of talk time to use over seven days. You can extend this number or add minutes by purchasing additional credits, with a tiered pricing model. At the moment, there's no limit to the number of Burner numbers you can have at a time (Cohn said some users have eight). Your Burner numbers are all stored in list form on your main screen, with a label, the number, and expiration date. It'd be helpful to receive some sort of reminder when your Burner number is about to expire so you can add credit as needed.

Missing Elements in Received Voice/Text
Once you have your Burner number, you can start texting and calling from within the app. It works smoothly. Your recipient will only see that it's from your Burner number, and performance is as good as dialing or texting with your actual number.

Receiving texts and calls is a different story. Caller ID never worked?I only saw my own Burner number as the originating number. I tried calling the number from several different lines and got the same result.

For received text messages I never received a notification, even though all texting notifications were turned on. The only way I knew I'd received a text sent to my Burner number was by entering the app itself.

Burner (for iPhone) is an innovative app that lets you buy disposable phone numbers, from which you can place calls and send SMSs through your own cell phone network. Tap a button to dispose, or burn, the number, immediately. It's a novel idea, and the closest thing I've seen to this is actually buying a prepaid cell phone and tossing it when you're done with the number. However, the app lacks a couple key features for those on the receiving end.?

Will Romney's veep choice help focus the rhetoric on 'big issues?'

There has been a lot of (hopeful) talk in the past week that Romney's choice of Paul Ryan, a so-called "thinker" in the Republican party, will lead to more substantive debate. But Robert Reich thinks?Romney?s choice won?t usher in a ?real debate? about much of anything.

By Robert Reich / August 18, 2012

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney speaks with the press during a flight to Hyannis-Barnstable Municipal airport for fundraising events on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, in Hyannis, Mass. But will the tenor and focus of the debate change, now that Paul Ryan has joined the ticket?

I keep hearing that Mitt Romney?s pick of Paul Ryan ?enables the country to have the debate it needs to have,? or ?permits us to have a grownup discussion,? or ?finally presents America with a real choice.? The?New York Times?oped page proclaims: ?Let the Real Debate Begin!?

Debate? What debate??

Romney isn?t even standing by Ryan?s budget plan. He?s been distancing himself from it from the moment he tabbed Ryan for the ticket.? ?I?m the one running for President,? he keeps saying in response to reporters? questions about whether he agrees with Ryan.

Not even Ryan will say publicly what the Romney economic plan entails. ?We haven?t run the numbers yet,? he repeats ? as if there were numbers in the Romney plan to run. But the numbers in Romney?s plan are like the numbers in Romney?s tax returns ? they?re invisible to anyone who might have an interest in knowing.?

But even if Romney were to adopt Ryan?s budget plan intact we still wouldn?t have a real debate because Ryan?s own plan itself lacks specifics that add up.

None of the budgets Ryan has come up with as chair of the House Budget Committee indicate which tax loopholes he?d close and exactly which programs for lower-income Americans he?d eliminate in order to balance the budget.

Ryan claims that his revenue targets can be met by ?broadening the tax base,? but he hasn?t said how he?d do it.??He?s insisted on keeping two of the biggest loopholes that overwhelmingly favor the wealthy ?the preferential tax rates on capital gains and dividends.

In fact, Ryan?s budget is larded with so much defense spending and so many tax cuts for the wealthy that it doesn?t even lower the debt ? when exposed to realistic assumptions.?

It baldly assumes that tax cuts for the rich will generate revenues totaling 18.4 percent of the economy over the next decade. That?s supply-side nonsense. When the non-partisan?Tax Policy Centerlooked at Ryan?s budget plan, it calculated that revenues would average only 16.3 percent over the decade ? $4 trillion less.

Under that revenue estimate, Ryan?s budget would increase debt as a share of the economy for more than four decades ? pushing the public debt to over 175 percent of GDP by 2050.

We can?t even have a clear debate about programs like Medicare, because Romney and Ryan seem determined to sow as much confusion as possible about their proposed voucher system. (At least Romney says his own approach to Medicare is ?almost identical? to Ryan?s.)

They?ve been charging all week that President Obama?s Affordable Care Act ?robs? Medicare of more than $700 billion over the next decade. In reality, the Romney-Ryan plan saves exactly the same amount. But it does so by shifting costs to seniors whose vouchers won?t keep up with the projected cost of health care. Obama?s savings come from reduced payments to medical providers.

What?s really driving Medicare costs ? as well as future federal budget deficits ? is the increasing costs of health care overall, combined with aging boomers. But don?t expect a debate over how to reign in healthcare costs because Romney and Ryan haven?t put forward a healthcare plan. All they want to do is repeal the Affordable Care Act, leaving 50 million Americans without health insurance coverage.

We won?t have a clear debate over whether to raise tax rates on the wealthy because Romney and Ryan are sticking to the conservative bromide that the wealthy and big corporations need more tax cuts in order to create jobs ? even though America?s top earners are now taking home more of the nation?s income than they have in eighty years, and corporations are sitting on more than a trillion dollars of cash they don?t know what to do with.

We won?t even have a debate over how to prevent another meltdown of Wall Street or a taxpayer bailout of ?too-big-to-fail? banks because Romney and Ryan don?t have a plan for preventing another Wall Street crisis. All they want to do is repeal the Dodd-Frank act.

Romney?s choice of Ryan won?t usher in a ?real debate? about much of anything except, perhaps, the danger to our democracy of billionaires like casino-magnate Sheldon Adelson (whose blessing Ryan immediately sought this week) who are pouring tens of millions of dollars into negative advertising. (Adelson alone has committed $100 million of his fortune.)

Those negative ads, by the way, are making it all the harder for average Americans to sort out the truth from well-financed big lies ? and understand, let alone debate, the big issues this election year.

AT&T and Verizon Expand Their 4G LTE Networks

In telecommunications, 4G is the fourth generation of cell phone mobile communications standards. It is a successor of the third generation (3G) standards. A 4G system provides mobile ultra-broadband Internet access, for example to laptops with USB wireless modems, to smartphones, and to other mobile devices. Likely applications include amended mobile web access, IP telephony, gaming services, high-definition mobile TV, video conferencing and 3D television.

Verizone covers 75 % of USA through its 4G network

Verizon Wireless customers with compatible 4G LTE smartphones, modems, tablets and mobile hotspots will be able to wirelessly surf the Web, stream music and video, and download files up to 10 times faster than customers on 3G.

In real-world, fully loaded network environments, Verizon Wireless? 4G LTE customers should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

At & T and Verizone coverage areas

Both AT&T and Verizon have expanded their high-speed 4G LTE networks

Verizon expanded its 4G LTE network in 34 new markets today while the network has also become more widespread in 38 other markets. That expansion brings Verizon?s 4G LTE?grand total to 370 markets here in the United States, making it the carrier with the largest 4G LTE footprint far and away its original land.

AT&T on the other hand has some catching up to do. However, the carrier has taken another step in that direction today by expanding to five new markets today bringing its total 4G LTE footprint up to 53.

Both carriers plan to complete their 4G LTE roll outs by the end of 2013 though it?s clear that Verizon will very likely complete its roll out much sooner than that.

AT&T has brought 4G LTE access to five new markets that include Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, and Bentonville, Arkansas. It has also brought service to Waco, Texas.

This means that customers in those areas can now utilize 4G LTE devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note and Nokia Lumia 900.

4G LTE data speeds can reach up to 10 times faster than those found on a typical 3G network.

As for Verizon, it has launched its network in 34 markets. They include:

  • Hot Springs, AR.
  • Redding, CA.
  • Valdosta and Waycross, GA.
  • Centralia and Danville, IL.
  • Parsons, Salina and Topeka, KS.
  • Alexandria and Monroe, LA.
  • Pittsfield, MA.
  • Battle Creek and Muskegon, MI.
  • Mankato and Worthington, MN.
  • Joplin and Sedalia, MO.
  • Bismarck, Grand Forks and Minot, N.D.
  • Chillicothe, Ohio; Reading, PA.
  • Aberdeen, S.D.
  • Laredo, Odessa and Texarkana, TX.
  • Brattleboro and White River Junction, VT.
  • Charlottesville, VA.
  • Longview, WA.
  • Eau Claire, La Crosse and Manitowoc, WI.?

Markets that will see 4G LTE service expand today include:

  • Los Angeles and Santa Barbara/Santa Maria, CA. ATT and Verizon have expanded their high speed 4G LTE networks 300x183 AT&T and Verizon Expand Their 4G LTE Networks

  • Charleston, W.Va
  • Green Bay, WI.

With the new expansion, Verizon?s 4G LTE network now covers over 75% of the population in the United States.

AT&T and Verizon?s other competitors, Sprint and T-Mobile, are way behind the pack. Sprint launched its 4G LTE network in July and thus far, the network is only available in 15 areas around the U.S.

T-Mobile is even further behind as the carrier has not yet launched its 4G LTE network and won?t be doing so until sometime in 2013.

Texas sprayed as West Nile Virus spreads

By NBC News

Parts of northeast Texas were sprayed with insecticide early Friday in an aerial assault on?mosquitoes?as more cases of West Nile Virus were reported as far north as Illinois.

Planes began spraying an area of Dallas north of Interstate 30 and east of the Dallas North Tollway from 10pm local time (11 p.m. ET) Thursday night until the early hours of Friday, NBCDFW.com reported. More areas were expected to be sprayed later Friday.

Ten people in Dallas County have died after contracting the virus, and hundreds more have been infected.

Health officials confirmed a second case the mosquito-borne virus in DuPage County, Ill., according to a report in the Chicago Tribune on Friday.

According to the Center for Disease Control, there have been 693 confirmed cases across the United States, and 26 deaths.

It is the country's worst outbreak of the disease since it was first recorded in 1999, The New York Times reported.

The hot, dry weather across the country's midsection has created ideal conditions for some species of mosquito. The heat speeds up their life cycle, which accelerates the virus replication process. During a drought, standing water can quickly turn stagnant when it is not flushed away by rain or runoff.

More on this story from NBC News' affiliate NBCDFW in Dallas-Fort Worth

"This year is totally different from the experience Texas has had in the past," state Health Commissioner Dr. David Lakey told NBCDFW.com. "If it's nuisance mosquitoes, we ask the city or county to pay part of that. But in the midst of this disease outbreak, it's easier for us to go ahead and do it."

A national spraying company, Clarke Mosquito Control, was set to deploy two to five Beechcraft King Air twin-engine planes late Thursday night for three hours of spraying.

One county-wide application costs about $1 million. A second application is possible if the first attempt does not kill enough mosquitoes.

Taliban attack Pakistan air base, 10 dead

Heavily armed militants stormed a Pakistani air force base on Thursday, sparking clashes that left 10 people dead and raised concerns about the safety of the country's nuclear arsenal.

One security official was killed and a plane damaged in the pre-dawn assault at PAF Base Minhas claimed by the Taliban as militants again showed their ability to penetrate a sensitive military site five years into an insurgency.

The first strike on a base in more than a year came amid speculation that Pakistan could bow to US demands for an operation against militants in their main fortress of North Waziristan, in the tribal belt on the Afghan border.

An official denied there were nuclear weapons on the heavily guarded base, but the audacious assault raised further questions in the West about the dangers of Pakistan's atomic weapons falling into extremists' hands.

The Pakistan Air Force said nine attackers dressed in military uniforms and armed with rocket propelled-grenades and suicide vests targeted the base and adjacent Pakistan Aeronautical Complex at 2:00 am (2100 GMT Wednesday).

The complex assembles Mirage and, with Chinese help, JF-17 fighter jets.

PAF Minhas, in the town of Kamra in Punjab province 60 kilometres (35 miles) northwest of Islamabad, has been attacked twice before.

"Eight miscreants were killed inside the Minhas base boundary wall and one miscreant exploded himself outside the perimeters where he was hiding," the air force announced.

It said there had been a shootout "for more than two hours" and 10 hours after the assault began, spokesman Tariq Mahmood confirmed the base was "totally safe".

The Pakistani Taliban said planes at the base were being used to kill its fighters.

Spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan dedicated the attack to late Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and claimed four Taliban fighters were killed after destroying three aircraft and killed a dozen soldiers.

Witnesses said the attackers came round the back, exploiting the holiest night of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan to remain undetected as long as possible.

"Most of the male residents (from the village at the back) were in mosques for special prayers," local resident Athar Abbas told Express Television.

"I heard three or four explosions, there was heavy gunfire also," he said. "It appears that the militants arrived using a village track and climbed over the wall."

One officer told AFP that he saw flames after waking up for his late night meal, eaten during the dawn-to-dusk Muslim fasting month.

"There was an announcement by megaphone for soldiers not to move from the barracks and we were forbidden from going to the area where I saw the fire," he said. Special forces and police were scrambled to the scene.

Air force spokesman Mahmood said one security official had been killed, and the base commander wounded in the shoulder. Previous Taliban assaults on Pakistani military bases have exacted far higher casualty tolls.

In May 2011, it took 17 hours to quell an attack on an air base in Karachi claimed by the Taliban, piling embarrassment on the armed forces just three weeks after US troops killed bin Laden in Pakistan.

Pakistan has been on alert for independence day on Tuesday and the Muslim festival of Eid, which is expected to begin at the weekend.

On Tuesday, the head of the army, General Ashfaq Kayani, used his independence day address to describe the war on terror as "our own war and a just war" -- not the American conflict as often portrayed.

He said "no state can afford a parallel system of governance and militias", and called on the nation to stand united or face the risk of a "civil war situation".

Pakistan says 35,000 of its people, including more than 3,000 soldiers, have been killed as a result of terrorism since the 9/11 attacks and the 2001 US-led invasion of neighbouring Afghanistan.

Foreign ministry spokesman Moazzam Ahmad Khan was Thursday forced to deny any danger of Pakistan's nuclear warheads falling into the wrong hands.

"We have a robust command and control, so nobody should really worry about the security and safety of our assets," he told reporters.

The base in Kamra was most recently targeted on October 23, 2009 when a suicide bomber killed eight people at a checkpoint.
