Is Global Warming Causing A Record Breaking Lack Of Tornado Activity?

The year 2012 is breaking all-time records for lack of tornado activity, inviting the question whether global warming is causing a long-term decline in destructive extreme weather events.

According the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, only 12 tornadoes touched down in the United States during July 2012, shattering the previous July record low of 42 tornadoes recorded in 1960. Because radar technology in 1960 could not detect many of the smaller tornadoes that are detectable today, scientists believe the actual number of tornadoes that occurred in the previous record-low July 1960 was actually about 73. Accordingly, six times more tornadoes occurred in July 1960, the previous record-low year, than occurred in July 2012.

Similarly, less than 300 tornadoes were recorded in this year?s peak tornado season, which runs from mid-April through late-July. Approximately 850 tornadoes touch down during the peak season in an average year. Accordingly, three times more tornadoes occur during an average peak-tornado season than occurred in 2012.

Harold Brooks, a research meteorologist at the National Severe Storms Laboratory, says the lack of tornado activity is due to warm, dry weather in the American Midwest and a northerly tracking jet stream this year. These two factors have also reduced the number of strong thunderstorms that global warming alarmists claim are made more frequent and severe by global warming.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data show a long-term decline, at least since the mid-1970s, in strong tornadoes. This decline in strong tornadoes began precisely when global temperatures rebounded from a 30-year cooling spell.

Although strong tornado activity is declining in sync with the recent modest rise in global temperatures, global warming alarmists frequently assert that whenever one of the ever-less-frequent tornadoes occurs, global warming must be to blame. This is typical of the tactics of global warming alarmists, who rarely miss an opportunity to misrepresent scientific facts to further their political agenda.

After some tornadoes touched down in March of this year, for example, Brad Johnson of the leftist activist group Center for American Progress wrote an article tying the tornadoes to global warming. ?In the face of this warning, we must ask if our current path of increased pollution and decreased investment in public safety is the wisest course,? wrote Johnson.

Similarly, CNN meteorologist Alexandra Steele told viewers in April of this year that global warming was responsible for tornadoes that touched down in the Dallas area that month.

Tornadoes are becoming less frequent and less severe as our planet modestly warms. Yet global warming alarmists focus attention on the few tornadoes that still do occur and say that global warming is causing these increasingly rare tornadoes. The true question, however, is not whether global warming is causing more tornadoes, but whether the declining frequency and severity of tornadoes is being caused by global warming.

Dee Snider to Paul Ryan: Stop playing my song

Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider has asked Republican vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan's camp not to play his hit song, "We're Not Gonna Take It."

Ryan spokesman Brandon Buck wrote a pithy email in response: "We're Not Gonna Play It anymore."

Snider says in a statement that he does not support Ryan and denounced use of the song, an anthemic 1984 hit for the glam metal band.

It joins a long list of songs that musicians have asked politicians to stop using. Most recently, the rock band Silversun Pickups asked likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney to stop using the song "Panic Switch" last week. The campaign said the song's use was inadvertent.

Switzerland objects to Obama campaign film slur

Switzerland hit back Tuesday at a US presidential election campaign video that portrays the country as a tax haven.

In the video, a character named Miss Swiss Bank Account describes the Republican candidate Mitt Romney as a "boss millionaire with accounts everywhere", the ATS news agency reported.

The film gives "the impression that having a bank account in Switzerland is dubious in itself and its only aim is to hide money from the tax authorities," Switzerland's Federal Department for Foreign Affairs (DFAE) said.

Switzerland's Washington embassy reportedly expressed its unhappiness at the clip to the Obama team, ATS said.

In the clip, entitled "Romney Girl", the singing protagonist hails the Romney approach of "tax shelters everywhere", while a list of countries appear on screen showing Romney with bank accounts in Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Cayman Islands and Ireland.

The film is a fresh attempt to hurt the Republican candidate who dragged his heels over releasing his tax returns and then only produced his returns for the last two years.

In July, US magazine Vanity Fair revealed that Romney had a Swiss bank account worth $3 million, according to his 2010 tax return, ats said.

Web Site Marketing Methods | Internet Marketing News - Search ...

Get MORE Facebook Fans & Likes

Web site marketing is one of the most important methods for managing a business online. It allows for a business to get customers to the website who are most likely to buy from the company. Whether purchasing products, signing up for services or other activities, the only way to get results from a website is to let more people know that the website is there. Through effective web site marketing methods, this can be accomplished without a lot of risk.

Various tools are available to help a business owner to do well online. For example, web site marketing requires that you spend a good deal of time using several methods, not just one. Here are some of the various types of marketing your business may want to consider using to get full Internet exposure and maximum results.

1. The use of email marketing is quite important. Communicate with your clients through email. Emails must be designed to get them to click on the links to take them to the website. They need go out according to legal requirements, including anti spam laws.

2. Targeted traffic is key to building a website. Targeted traffic is traffic that comes to your website that has somehow been qualified. For example, the traffic could be coming in response to an ad or because the individual has already shown some interest in the products you have. Targeted traffic is much more likely to make a purchase than any other form of traffic. You want the largest amount of targeted visitors as possible.

3. Press releases are a tool to help any business to get the word out. Press releases work in mostly the same way as they would in the offline world. They simply communicate news to the media. This news gets around, and ultimately you can count on seeing an increase in traffic from these tools. Many of the businesses online that do not use them fail to reach their full potential.

As you consider what types of web site marketing your business needs, plan to spend some time learning the ins and outs of this field. A business owner does not necessarily need to have a budget as large as other companies, but they do need to know the proper types of web site marketing for their website and the tools for making it happen. There can be a rather steep learning curve but it can bear fruit.

A web site without any type of marketing is one that is not getting enough traffic, enough sales and enough return customers. Proper marketing can help to turn even a small business into a successful, financially strong company. Those that do not have successful web marketing may find themselves without the value that they could have had. The good news is that it is very possible to have this within a business today when you either educate yourself on how to market or hire a company to do it for you.

Curiosity rover begins vaporizing Mars, one rock at a time

A Martian rock dubbed 'Coronation' became the first victim of the Curiosity rover's ChemCam, which vaporizes rocks with a laser and examines the sparks to determine the chemical composition of the Red Planet's surface.

The?Mars rover Curiosity?zapped a rock scientists are now calling "Coronation" on Sunday (Aug. 19) to test an instrument that measures the composition of targets hit by its powerful laser beam. The rover fired 30 laser pulses in 10 seconds at the fist-size Coronation rock in order to analyze the results.

"We got a great spectrum of Coronation ? lots of signal," said Roger Wiens, lead scientist for the rover's laser-wielding instrument at the Los Almos National Laboratory in New Mexico, in a statement. "Our team is both thrilled and working hard, looking at the results. After eight years building the instrument, it's payoff time!"

Curiosity's?Chemical and Camera instrument, or ChemCam, fires a laser pulses that last just five one-billionths of a second but deliver more than a million watts of power, enough to turn solid rock into an ionized plasma. A trio of spectrometers in the tool then studies the sparks from the laser fire on 6,144 different wavelengths of ultraviolet, visible and infrared light to determine the composition of the vaporized rock.

Sunday's laser firing was primarily target practice for Curiosity, but early results suggest the high-tech instrument is working well, mission managers said. Data from the test showed ChemCam is performing even better than in ground tests on Earth, they added.

"It's so rich, we can expect great science from investigating what might be thousands of targets with ChemCam in the next two years," said instrument deputy project scientist Sylvestre Maurice of the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Plan?tologie (IRAP) in Toulouse, France.

ChemCam is one of 10 instruments packed on Curiosity that rely on the rover's plutonium power source to study?Mars. The $2.5 billion rover landed on the Red Planet on Aug. 5 and is expected to explore its Gale Crater landing site for the next two years to determine if the region could have ever supported microbial life.

PFT: Chargers' Brown breaks ankle,?out 8 weeks

tim-tebow2Getty Images

The Jets have made it widely known that they?ll be using the Wildcat this year.? But what if they actually won?t be using it at all?

They?ve hired former Dolphins coach Tony Sparano, who four years ago bedeviled the Patriots with the surprise unveiling of the NFL?s version of the alternative attack, which works best when the players in the base offense remain on the field.? In September 2008, the Dolphins slapped it together in the week preceding a game in New England ? and they scored four touchdowns on six plays with Ronnie Brown taking the snap in shotgun formation, Ricky Williams lining up as a flanker who would come in motion and either get the ball on a handoff or (in that specific game) not get the ball on a handoff, and quarterback Chad Pennington split wide as a receiver.

Since then, it?s been used by several other teams, even though there has been a sense in more recent seasons that the Wildcat has run its course.? In other incarnations, the Wildcat entailed actually removing the starting quarterback from the field and using a different signal-caller.?? The Eagles did it with Mike Vick (to the chagrin of Donovan McNabb).? The Jets did it with Brad Smith.? Even the Dolphins did it with Pat White, a second-round draft bust taken only months after Miami?s starting-quarterback-stays-on-the-field Wildcat wowed the league.

Tebow has worked with a similar, but different, approach during his two seasons in Denver, lining up in shotgun with a tailback to his side.? The base play is a simple read-option, with the ball going to the running back if the defensive end on the side of the tailback comes wide or staying in Tebow?s hands, with the quarterback running to where the defensive end was if he bites on the handoff and crashes toward what would have been the point of attack.

From that basic look, Tebow can also pass after faking the handoff, as he did on the only play from scrimmage in overtime against the Steelers in January.

If that?s what the Jets will be using, it?s not the Wildcat.? So what will the Jets be using?

There?s a reason, in our view, for the Jets to be so secretive about their practices entailing what they?re calling the ?Wildcat.?? There?s a reason, in our view, for the Jets to have not even broken out the Wildcat (or, as the case may be, the ?TeBone?) in preseason games.? And there?s a reason, in our view, for the Jets to be spending so much time talking about how preparing for the Wildcat will suck time away from preparing for the base offense.

We (and, really, for something potentially as harebrained as this I should say, ?I?) think that, when the Jets host the Bills on September 9, what they use as the ?Wildcat? package will neither be the Wildcat nor the Tebow read-option base offense.

Consider this.? The Bills new quarterbacks coach is David Lee.? He?s the same David Lee who was the quarterbacks coach in Miami in (yep) 2008.? Though Sparano gets the credit for the Miami version of the Wildcat, his offensive coordinator (Dan Henning) called the attack that accounted for 28 points in the 38-13 thrashing of the Pats ?the David Lee Special.?? (That?s straight from Tim Layden?s Blood, Sweat and Chalk, easily the best modern compendium of football analysis.)? It was Lee who had pitched the ?Wild Hog? offense he?d used at Arkansas with Darren McFadden to Henning on the flight home from a 31-10 loss at Arizona only a week earlier.

And it?s Lee who now is working for the team the Jets will face in Week One and Week 17.

Chances are that David Lee knows how to stop the David Lee Special.? Chances are that the Jets won?t be using it.

Last year, Pats coach Bill Belichick showed not once but twice that he knows how to shut down the Broncos TeBone offense.? And, as always, the Jets play the Pats twice.? Chances are that the Jets won?t be using the attack Tebow ran in Denver.

Then there are the Dolphins, who have plenty of guys on defense who were on the team when Sparano ran the show and Lee coached the quarterbacks and the Dolphins used both the true Wildcat and the short-lived and ill-fated Pat White version of the read-option.? Since the Jets also will face Miami twice per year, chances are that the Jets won?t be giving the Dolphins any looks that they may have seen in practice over the past few seasons.

So if it?s not the Wildcat or the TeBone per se, what will the Jets be using?? Maybe it?ll be the true single wing, a shell-game of an offense with a direct snap to Tebow and guys like Shonn Greene as the tailback and John Conner assuming the role of what was/is the ?quarterback? in the offense, lined up not far behind the gap in the two tackles of the unbalanced line ? and ready to blow up whomever stands between Tebow or Greene and the secondary.

Throw in Santonio Holmes as the single wingback in the ?single wing,? and Holmes can play the role of Demaryius Thomas getting single coverage, if/when Tebow fakes a handoff and musters a reasonably accurate throw.

The point is that the Jets are smart enough to know that the teams they?ll face in six out of 16 games are smart enough to know how to defend the Wildcat and/or the TeBone.? With Mark Sanchez leaving the field and Tebow entering from the sideline (unless the big secret is that the Jets plan to use Tebow as a fullback or tight end in the base offense), the Jets need a genuine element of surprise.

The surprise could be that, once Tebow enters the game, the offense that opposing defenses see will be nothing like what they expected to see.
