You can?t borrow your way out of debt. You can?t get out of a hole by digging out the bottom. True debt help is not quick or easy.

      Larry Burkett, noted financial author, says debt is not the problem; it is the symptom. I feel debt is the symptom of overspending and undersaving. Our certified counselors will not recommend debt consolidation for a client. Why? Because debt consolidation doesn?t work.

      Debt Consolidation Statistics
      A friend of mine works for a debt consolidation firm whose internal statistics estimate that 78% of the time, after someone consolidates his credit card debt, the debt grows back. Why? He still doesn?t have a game plan to either pay cash or not buy at all. He also hasn?t saved for ?unexpected events? which will also become debt.

      Debt consolidation seems appealing because there is a lower interest rate on some of the debt and a lower payment. However, in almost every case we review, we find that the lower payment exists not because the rate is actually lower but because the term is extended. If you stay in debt longer, you get a lower payment, BUT if you stay in debt longer, you pay the lender more, which is why they are in the debt consolidation business.

      Debt Consolidation Example
      For example, let?s say you have ,000 in unsecured debt, including a 2-year loan for ,000 at 12%, and a 4-year loan for ,000 at 10%. Your monthly payment on the ,000 loan is 7 and 3 on the ,000 loan, for a total payment of ,100 per month. The debt consolidation company tells you they have been able to lower your payment to 0 per month and your interest rate to 9% by negotiating with your creditors and rolling the loans together into one. Sounds great, doesn?t it? Who wouldn?t want to pay 0 less per month in payments?

      But they don?t tell you that it will now take you 6 years to pay off the loan. This may not sound that bad to you at first unless you realize how much more you will actually pay in additional payments. You will now pay ,080 to pay off the new loan vs. ,392 for the original loans, even with the lower interest rate of 9%. This means you paid ,688 more for the ?lower payment?. Not such a good deal after all. This example shows you why they are in the business ? because they make money off of you.?

    Is it smart to use a home equity loan to pay off car loans, and a line of credit?
    My husband and I need to lower our monthly payments. We have no debt except a line of credit for ,000 with the payment of 0 and two car loans both adding up to about ,000 and the combined payment of 50/mo. So, we are spending about 00/month for these 3 things. If we got a loan for 0,000 and payed all these off, our payment at 6.6% would be around 0/month. Of course I would always pay more than that per month which would go to principle. Why isn?t this a good thing to do? I realize that getting a new car would add to our payments once again. So, that would not be smart. Other than that, is this a smart thing to do? It seems like it is, but then why don?t more people do this?

      In theory it sounds good. But here?s what happens. You borrow the 100 grand and now you have financed your two old cars for 15,20 or 30 years. If that isn?t bad enough statistics show that you will have more car loans, credit cards, etc. PLUS the 100 grand loan in 5 years. You cannot ?borrow? yourself to prosperity. Pay off your obligations without refinancing and you will be proud of your actions.

The banking institution refused my request, stating that i have some delinquent payment issues, on cards, etc. He stated since i have a note with them the only thing he can do, is re-adjust my payments on that particular note i have with them. I am new at this type thing, could someone please give me some advice? I am just trying to bail myself out of the hold that i am in, to make a life better for my daughter.       Poor credit, add liens on home?s (which takes away from equity) high credit card debt, and income unknown. From the little gathered here it sounds like you are already over your head, especially in income to credit ratio. Add to all this the credit crunch that is rapidly approaching, and the glut of homes on the market leading to, or shortly will be the depreciation of those homes, not likely will you get a loan with any terms that are doable. Place one of the homes on the market and hope for the best. Place the one with the most equity so you can get rid of the liens. Do not keep digging yourself deeper and deeper in a debt you may end up losing everything. Not what you want to hear and most likely will go with one of the many scammer?s that propagate these boards. So will wait for the question in months to come asking I am being forclosed on two homes what should I do?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The jobs crisis isn't getting worse. But it isn't getting much better, either.

The economy added just enough jobs last month to ease fears of a new recession. But hiring is still too weak to bring down unemployment, which has been stuck at about 9 percent for more than two years.

The nation added 103,000 jobs in September, an improvement from the month before, the Labor Department said Friday. But the total includes 45,000 Verizon workers who were rehired after going on strike and were counted as job gains.

Even counting those workers, the job gains weren't enough to get the economy going. It takes about 125,000 jobs a month just to keep up with population growth. For September, the unemployment rate stayed stuck at 9.1 percent.

"Well, the sky is not falling just yet," Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors, said in a note to clients. But there was nothing great about the report, he added. "It's incredible how low our sights have been set."

On one hand, the unemployment report was encouraging for economists. Some of them had feared the nation would lose jobs in September, raising the risk of a painful second recession.

But everyday Americans can't take much solace from it, either. The Great Recession has been over for almost two and a half years, and while corporate profits and the stock market have bounced back in that time, unemployment is still high.

There are 14 million people counted as unemployed in the United States. An additional 9.3 million are working part time and would rather work full time. And 2.5 million more have simply given up looking for a job.

The Labor Department said the economy added more jobs than first estimated in July and August. The government's first reading had said the economy added zero jobs in August.

While the report was clearly better than feared, it also showed the economy is not gaining much momentum, said Tom Porcelli, chief U.S. economist at RBC Capital Markets.

"It moves you away from the ledge," he said.

It was also discouraging news for President Barack Obama, who will almost certainly have to wage his 2012 campaign under the highest unemployment of any president running for re-election since World War II.

Gene Sperling, a White House economic adviser, said the administration was "slightly comforted" that the jobs figure came in better than expected. But he said it was not good enough.

Obama, adopting a combative tone as he waits for the Republicans to settle on a nominee to oppose him, has challenged Congress to get behind his $447 billion jobs bill or risk being run out of Washington.

The Obama plan aims to jolt the economy by cutting taxes and increasing spending on schools, roads and other public projects. He has proposed paying for it in part by raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations.

Obama's Republican rivals are trying to persuade voters that he is to blame for high unemployment and the sluggish economy. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney told Fox News Channel on Friday that Obama is criticizing Congress simply because he is "looking for someone to blame."

The report initially sent the stock market higher. Stock prices later fell after a credit rating agency downgraded Italy and Spain, adding to concern about Europe's debt crisis. The Dow Jones industrial average was flat in afternoon trading.

The figures offered some evidence that business activity is increasing. The temporary help industry added almost 20,000 jobs. And the average workweek lengthened slightly. Wages also rose a bit.

More hiring and better pay could boost consumer spending, which drives about 70 percent of the economy. When people spend more, it generates demand for businesses, which then step up hiring.

The private sector added 137,000 jobs, up from August but below July's revised total. Governments shed 34,000 jobs. The cuts came mainly from local governments, which laid off teachers and other school employees.

State and local governments usually add jobs during economic recoveries. This time, they have cut more than a half-million jobs since the recession ended in June 2009. Without those cuts, overall job growth would be much healthier.

For example, after the recession of 1990 and 1991, state and local governments added about 18,000 jobs a month. If they had done that this month, overall job growth would have been more like 150,000 ? probably enough to lower unemployment some.

In the first four months of this year, the economy added an average of 180,000 jobs a month. But then manufacturing slowed, consumer confidence crashed and Washington fell into gridlock, first over whether to raise the nation's borrowing limit and then on how best to strengthen the economy.

Meanwhile, hiring slowed. The economy added only 53,000 jobs in May and 20,000 in June. Friday's figures showed that hiring improved in July, slowed in August and rebounded in September.

The dip in August appears to be because of the fight in Washington and because of increasing concerns about debt owed by European nations. If those nations can't pay that debt, banks in Europe will be hit with losses, perhaps even causing another financial crisis, like the one in 2008.

Stocks gyrated wildly in response to the turmoil in the U.S. and Europe, and many businesses put off hiring. Companies added only 42,000 jobs in August, far fewer than July's gain of 173,000.

The private sector rebounded last month and added 137,000 jobs. But September's number showed that businesses "are still in a very cautious phase," said Nigel Gault, an economist at IHS Global Insight.

And the threats from Europe and Washington gridlock aren't going away, Gault said. Congress still hasn't agreed on a budget for next year, and will fight over whether to extend Social Security tax cuts, among other measures.

Gault forecasts U.S. economic growth at a 2.4 percent annual rate for the third quarter, which includes July, August and September. He expects growth at 1 percent for the last three months of the year. Normal growth is more like 3 percent.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke warned Congress this week that the economic recovery was "close to faltering," with slow job growth dragging down consumer confidence.

(AP) ? The 2011 Nobel Prize in literature was awarded on Thursday to Tomas Transtromer of Sweden, whose surrealistic works about the mysteries of the human mind won him wide recognition as the most influential Scandinavian poet of recent decades.

Characterized by powerful imagery, Transtromer's poems are often built around his own experiences and infused with his love of music and nature. His later poems are darker, probing existential questions of life, death and disease.

Transtromer is considered a master of metaphor, weaving powerful images into his poems without much embellishment. The award citation noted that his collections "are characterized by economy."

"Waking up is a parachute jump from dreams. Free of the suffocating turbulence the traveler sinks toward the green zone of morning," reads the prelude to "The Great Enigma," his last collection, released in Swedish in 2004 and two years later in English.

"Things flare up. From the viewpoint of the quivering lark he is aware of the huge root systems of the trees, their swaying underground lamps," Transtromer wrote. "But aboveground there's greenery ? a tropical flood of it ? with lifted arms, listening to the beat of an invisible pump."

A psychologist and avid amateur pianist, Transtromer (TRAWN-stroh-mur), 80, suffered a stroke in 1990 that left him half-paralyzed and largely unable to speak, but he continued to write, publishing "The Sorrow Gondola" in 1996 and the "The Great Enigma." He has since retired from writing.

Transtromer has been a perennial favorite for the Nobel and in recent years Swedish journalists have waited outside Transtromer's apartment in Stockholm on the day the 10 million kronor ($1.5 million) award is announced.

"Very good," a smiling Transtromer told reporters when asked how he felt. He gave mostly one-syllable answers to reporters' questions, seated next to his wife, Monica, who filled in the details.

The couple had sat down in front of the TV to watch a live broadcast of the literature announcement when the phone rang, just five minutes before it was to start, she said.

"It was a very big surprise," she said. "Tomas, I know you were surprised. Despite the speculation for so many years you haven't really taken it seriously."

She said that, most of all, Transtromer was happy that the prize went to poetry for the first time since Wislawa Szymborska of Poland won in 1996.

Transtromer is the first Swede to receive the literature prize since Eyvind Johnson and Harry Martinson shared it in 1974. Peter Englund, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, has said that it is especially cautious about awarding Swedish writers out of fear of being seen as biased.

"I think we've been quite thoughtful and haven't been rash," Englund said after the award was announced.

"One should congratulate the academy, that finally, in the last minute, dares to give the prize to Transtromer, despite the fact he is Swedish," Swedish poet Bob Hansson wrote on his blog after the announcement. "The Swedish modesty, or the Swedish fear of being Swedish, has postponed Transtromer's award by at least 10 years."

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said the award made him "happy and proud," and he hoped it would draw global attention to Swedish literature.

The Swedish Academy has also been criticized for being too Euro-centric, ignoring writers from other parts of the world. Seven of the last 10 winners have been Europeans.

While critics are impressed by the beauty of his writing, some have criticized it for a lack of social commentary, so often found in the works of other Nobel winners, including last year's laureate Mario Vargas Llosa of Peru.

Humble and unpretentious, Transtromer has always avoided political debates and has stayed away from the public eye as much as possible.

"I think dad above all thinks this is great for his readers," his daughter, Paula Transtromer, said about the prize. "That's most important to him."

Born in Stockholm in 1931, Transtromer was raised by his mother, a teacher, after she divorced his father ? a journalist. He started writing poetry while studying at the Sodra Latin school in Stockholm.

His work was published in several journals before he published his first book of poetry, "17 poems," in 1954, winning much acclaim in Sweden.

He studied literature, history, poetics, the history of religion and psychology at Stockholm University, and later divided his time between poetry and his work as a psychologist. Between 1960 and 1966 he worked as psychologist at Roxtuna, an institution for juvenile offenders.

"A lot of great poets don't do anything but writing poetry," Transtromer's longtime friend, Swedish author Lars Gustafsson said. "But here you have a man who has worked really hard his entire life as a psychologist and who has been writing on Saturday afternoons and in his spare time, often in small, cramped rooms."

"I think his readers also experience him in that way. His poetry is very elementary. It is about things that nearly all people share, such as dreams," Gustafsson added.

Staffan Bergsten, who wrote a biography on Transtrom published this year, said his work is characterized by a combination of the ordinary ? people, nature ? and the feeling that "there's something secretive underneath."

"No strange words, nothing like that. Anyone can understand it at some level. But then there are other dimensions," he said.

Transtromer's most famous works include the 1966 "Windows and Stones," in which he depicts themes from his many travels, and "Baltics" from 1974.

Since the 1950's, Transtromer has had a close friendship with American poet Robert Bly, who translated many of his works into English. In 2001, Transtromer's Swedish publishing house Bonniers published the correspondence between the two writers in the book "Air Mail."

Earlier this year, Bonniers released a collection of his works between 1954 and 2004 to celebrate the poet's 80th birthday.

"We have waited and waited, we had nearly stopped hoping (for a Nobel) but still not given up the last strand of hope," said Anna Tillgren, spokeswoman for Bonniers. "We are overwhelmed. This is the happiest day ever for many of us working at the publishing house."

Dan Halperin, publisher of Ecco, one of Transtromer's U.S. publishers and an imprint of HarperCollins, also welcomed the award, saying Transtromer's poetry is unique: "dense, rich and completely its own thing."

On Thursday the availability of Transtromer's work in English was highly limited, making any post-Nobel sales bump difficult. Copies of "The Great Enigma," ''The Half-Finished Heaven" and his "Selected Poems" were out of stock on Amazon.com and no digital editions exist.

British bookmaker Ladbrokes said a surge of late bets on Thursday had made Transtromer the 4/6 favorite for the prize.

"He was second favorite to begin with and stayed quite prominent throughout," said spokesman Alex Donohue.

"This morning he became the favorite after a surge of late bets, several of which were from Sweden," he said, adding the betting pattern wasn't suspicious.

"The nearer you get to the event, there are always going to be people who have an idea of what is going on ... we're certainly not suggesting anything untoward was going on."

The Nobel Prize, considered one of the highest accolades in literature, is given only to living writers. The academy's choices sometimes spark heated debate among literature experts.

Some of its previous picks were obscure even to literature experts, while others were widely celebrated authors decorated with numerous other awards.

Acclaimed writers who never won the Nobel include Leo Tolstoy, Marcel Proust, James Joyce and Graham Greene.

Crying Is Healthy, Even for Tough Football Players (LiveScience.com)

Everyone needs a good cry now and then ? even football players.

College football players who think it's OK to cry, say, after losing a big game, have higher self-esteem than those tough-guy players who say tears are a no-no, a new study shows. The researchers also found that players who show physical affection toward their teammates are happier.

The researchers studied how gender stereotypes about crying affect football players, and how their beliefs regarding emotion on the field influence other aspects of their lives.

Participants included 150 college football players from two universities, one in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and the other in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The participants had an average age of 19 and were mostly white.

The students read a scenario about a football player named Jack who cries after a game, with participants reading one of four twists to the story: Jack just tears up after losing the game; he tears up after winning the game; he sobs after losing the game; or he sobs after winning the game.

Students tended to think tearing up after losing a game was typical and appropriate for a football player. However, they didn't accept sobbing as an appropriate reaction in the losing situation. The players also said they would be more likely to tear up than sob if they were in Jack's place.

The study also showed that the group that read a story in which Jack sobs after losing a game asserted that his reaction was more typical among football players than the group that read a story in which Jack sobs after his team won the game.

"In 2009, the news media disparaged University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow for crying on the sidelines after losing a big game, even labeling him Tim 'Tearbow,'" study researcher Y. Joel Wong, a psychologist at Indiana University-Bloomington, said in a statement. ?

In a second experiment, 153 football players, who were also mostly white and had an average age of 19, answered questions regarding whether they felt pressured by society to act powerful and competitive while displaying little emotion and affection in front of other men.

The researchers also questioned the subjects about their overall life satisfaction and the ways in which they expressed emotions on and off the field. The experiment's results showed that football players do feel pressure to conform to gender roles when it comes to expressing emotion, but also found that players who were never showed affection toward their teammates were less satisfied with their lives.

Overall, college football players who "are emotionally expressive are more likely to have a mental edge on and off the field," said study researcher Jesse Steinfeldt, who is also a psychologist at the university.

The findings may also speak to the aforementioned incident in which Tebow was ridiculed for crying on the sidelines after losing a big game. [Read: Touchy-Feely NBA Teams More Likely to Win]

"The college football players in our study who believed Jack's crying was appropriate had higher self-esteem," Wong said. "In contrast, players who believed Jack's crying was inappropriate yet felt they would likely cry in Jack's situation had lower self-esteem."

The study was recently published in the journal Psychology of Men & Masculinity.
