Out and About on the Gulf: A Weekend Recap

photo 3

Hope everyone had a good weekend. I?m wrapping up my time here in New Orleans, which has been lovely. Fingers crossed, I?ll be getting out right before Isaac arrives.

The last time I was here, I featured a bunch of new, vegan (or vegan friendly) dining spots here in Crescent City (recaps here, here, and here). On this trip, we laid low and did a lot of cooking at home. Case in point: Friday night?s beautiful heirloom tomato and pumpkinseed basil napoleon:

IMG_2513

On Thursday, though, Chloe and I made a trip to Maurepas Foods in Bywater, which is one of the more hip (and one of my favorite) neighborhoods in NOLA. The tagline of this cheerful, bustling establishment is ?purveyors of robust cuisine.? I happen to love robust cuisine myself, so I was excited for this menu!

IMG_2498

Maurepas is not a vegan restaurant by any stretch, but the menu has a big, impressive, and innovative selection of small plate vegetable dishes, all of which are either vegan or easy to veganize. I was struck by the interesting pairings of flavor and texture! In the end, I went with a green and apple salad (hold the cheese, please) with fennel that was very delicately roasted:

IMG_2503

The snap beans with charred tomato puree and seared tofu (it?s ?shrimp crusted tofu? on the menu, so I asked if they might please simply prepare the tofu plain; they were totally fine with that!):

IMG_2504

And a raw zucchini salad with blueberry vinaigrette dressing.

IMG_2502

Chloe got the cucumbers with mustard seeds, which I ended up stealing from sharing with her (thanks, Chlo).

IMG_2505

I also got some fascinating sounding peach and pepper drink that was waaaaaaaay too spicy for this girl. My bad: our server warned me, and I didn?t listen. Cool color, though:

IMG_2501

I was truly impressed with the veggie dishes at Maurepas! The preparation was minimalist and thoughtful, and the combinations of flavors were spot-on. The cucumbers and the beans may have been the two highlights, but the zucchini dish actually inspired the quick, easy lunch you?ll see here on the blog tomorrow. I love it when omni restaurants highlight, emphasize, and put passion and creativity into the produce on their menus. At Maurepas, vegetables feature just as prominently on the menu as some of the non-vegetarian plates. It?s a great message to be sending, and the restaurant?s high quality, fresh produce ensures that diners will be impressed with how great veggies can taste!

IMG_2493

I also appreciated some of the restaurant?s funky touches, like this tabletop candle:

IMG_2494

Yesterday, we all visited a local Vietnamese restaurant on the west bank (Tan Dinh) for lunch. NOLA has a vibrant Vietnamese restaurant scene, and this spot was authentic, delicious, and affordable. The portion sizes were also incredibly generous, as the following anecdote makes clear! I had ordered the summer rolls (rice noodles, mixed veggies, peanut sauce), and asked for a double order. Our waitress raised her eyebrows and told me I?d have a LOT of food on my hands. I?m used to being told this by servers (exhibit A: the three plates I ordered at lunch on Thursday, above?), and replied ?I can handle it, don?t worry.? When the rolls came, though, they were absolutely giant!

Chloe and Knud and I had a good laugh over it. No matter: I had leftovers, which came in very handy for my beach expedition today!

Speaking of which, this morning, Chloe and Knud and I decided to venture out from New Orleans and Louisiana, and explore the beaches of Alabama! We drove to Dauphin Island, which is a tiny, scenic island on the gulf coast. The scenery was beautiful, and the water was warm. I could have spent all day hopping over waves and getting caught in the surf. Not to mention soaking in a lot of sunlight.

The coming semester promises to be incredibly hectic on many fronts (school, MCAT, volunteering, new professional work, blogging as usual), and I?m more than a little scared to be returning to DC tomorrow morning and facing it all again. That said, I?m really grateful to have had a short chance to recharge my batteries, soak up fresh air, and see my oldest and dearest friend this week, and I do feel refreshed and grateful.

Tomorrow, a quick, simple, easy raw lunch dish!

Mobile marketing is one of the latest methods of advertising for any kind of business. If it is done correctly, you are sure to benefit greatly from all of your efforts. This article was written to help you know the methods that work and what to avoid, in your mobile marketing campaign.

Be sure that you understand that a mobile site is not just a scaled-down version of your business, but it?s actually a summarized version. Many mobile marketers make the mistake of attempting to scale down their entire business and ultimately end up losing customers. You do not need to create two separate businesses here.

If you can, address the recipient of the message by their name. People will be more likely to pay attention to the message if it is addressed to them directly. Address them in an energetic manner so that you capture their attention and encourage them to find out more about your campaign.

Mobile marketing is a different kind of marketing because it is not a strategy, it is an objective. You cannot force people into this kind of marketing so your goal should be on the end result, the objective to get more customers involved and support your business as opposed to trying to force it on them

Customer love rewards so reward them just for signing up. Just for signing up give them a coupon for a free item when they come back and purchase something else. Since they are giving you their mobile phone number, reward them with something worthwhile that will keep them coming back.

Use the provided information to make the most of your efforts in your mobile marketing campaign. These tips will help you to save time by going through the trial and error step that many businesses have had to go through before finding the methods that work well for their growing companies.

Crock Pot Garden Marinara Sauce ? Sumptuous Spoonfuls

Garden Marinara Sauce in the Crockpot

I am guest posting over at Stacy Makes Cents!?Stacy contacted me back in June to ask if I would do a guest post for her in August ? something made in the crockpot. The only things she asked were:

  • Not a recipe already on the site
  • Submitted a week in advance of your date
  • Only use whole food ingredients

I thought that?s no sweat! I can totally handle that ? Well, time went by and the date she had given me as a deadline came and went and I hadn?t sent her anything. You know how life gets so busy ? this guest post completely slipped my mind! So I totally failed on the ?submitted a week in advance? part, but I did make a new recipe with whole foods!

So head on over to Stacy?s blog for the recipe.

Grizzly bear kills hiker in Denali National Park

(AP) ? A hiker in Alaska's Denali National Park photographed a grizzly bear for at least eight minutes before the bear mauled and killed him in the first fatal attack in the park's history, officials said Saturday.

Investigators have recovered the camera and looked at the photographs, which show the bear grazing and not acting aggressively before the attack, Denali Park Superintendent Paul Anderson said.

The hiker was backpacking alone along the Toklat River on Friday afternoon when he came within 50 yards of the bear, far closer than the quarter-mile of separation required by park rules, officials said.

"They show the bear grazing in the willows, not acting aggressive in any form or manner during that period of time," Anderson said.

Investigators have identified the man but won't release his name until they've notified his family. They said he's a U.S. citizen but declined to release any other information about him. Rangers were hoping to recover his remains later Saturday after ensuring the scene was safe. Several other bears have been seen in the area.

Officials learned of the attack after hikers stumbled upon an abandoned backpack along the river about three miles from a rest area on Friday afternoon. The hikers also spotted torn clothing and blood. They immediately hiked back and alerted staff park.

Rangers in a helicopter spotted a large male grizzly bear sitting on the hiker's remains, which they called a "food cache" in the underbrush about 100 to 150 yards from the site of the attack on Friday. A state trooper shot and killed the bear on Saturday, and investigators will examine its stomach contents and use other tests to confirm it's the animal that killed the hiker.

There's no indication that the man's death was the result of anything other than a bear attack, investigators said, adding that it's the first known fatal mauling in the park's nearly century-long history.

"Over the years, and especially since the 1970s, the park has worked very diligently to minimize the conflict between humans and wildlife in the park," Anderson said. "We have some of the most stringent human-wildlife conflict regulations in the National Park system, and I think those are largely responsible for the fact that there hasn't been a fatal attack."

Park officials said they don't believe other registered backpackers are in the immediate area. That portion of the park is closed but other wilderness areas remain open, officials said.

Prior to receiving a permit to hike in the area, all backpackers in the park receive mandatory bear awareness training that teaches them to stay at least a quarter-mile away from bears, and to slowly back away if they find themselves any closer. Investigators confirmed that the hiker had received that training.

Denali is located 240 miles north of Anchorage. It spans more than 6 million acres and is home to numerous wild animals, including bears, wolves, caribou and moose.

Canada's leaders slammed over drug shortages

Canada needs a national approach to managing its supply of medicines, starting with a mandatory reporting system for drug shortages, two leading professional journals have urged.

Compared with the more decisive action taken by other nations, Canada has demonstrated a lack of preparedness for - and ability to cope with - the recent "unprecedented" levels of shortages, particularly of antiepileptic, chemotherapy, antibiotic and anaesthetic agents, says an editorial published jointly in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) and the Canadian Pharmacists Journal (CPJ).

These shortages result in poorer health, with consequences such as worsening of medical conditions, negative reactions to substitute drugs, cancellation of surgeries and procedures, and increased costs to patients and the health care system, say authors Dr Matthew Standbrook, deputy editor of the CMAJ, and Rosemary Killeen, editor-in-chief of the CPJ.

"This situation will not improve in the foreseeable future without major changes in how Canadian governments - federal, provincial and territorial - respond to it," they warn, and go on to ask: "if governments do not start showing leadership on this issue, who will act in the interest of Canadian patients?"

While Europe and the US require drugmakers to inform governments in advance of possible drug shortages, Canada is relying on industry to establish a voluntary reporting system. But a mandatory reporting system for impending shortages should be created and maintained, so that healthcare stakeholders at all levels have adequate and timely information with which to make decisions, the authors urge.

"Canada cannot cope adequately with a problem of this scope with 14 regional health systems operating independently - federal involvement in this issue is unavailable," they say, and suggest that, with national leadership to manage the issue, Canada could take other steps to minimise the effects of shortages, including:

- expanding the national pharmaceutical stockpile;

- mandating that there must be at least two or more suppliers for essential drugs; and?

- establishing a system to share supplies across the country and to restock quickly from international supplies if there is a shortage.

They also point out that while regulatory authority for drugs belongs to Health Canada, the agency has "only belatedly" started to inform the public about drug shortages and to expedite approval of alternate suppliers of products that have been in short supply.

Moreover, the authors suggest, delays at Health Canada in approving new drugs and production process improvements for existing drugs have likely exacerbated the shortages.

"The people of Canada deserve greater responsiveness and action from their elected officials to safeguard the supply of some of the most critical components of health care delivery," write Dr Standbrook and Ms Killeen.

"It is ridiculous and intolerable that a wealthy, developed nation like Canada cannot reliably provide medicines to its people," they add.

- The "unnecessary" length of Canada's review and approval process for new cancer drugs was strongly criticised last month in a report by the Fraser Institute, a Canadian free-market policy think tank.

Of the 33 oncology drugs slated for market approval between 2003 and 2011, 30 were approved in the US, 26 in the European Union (EU) and just 24 in Canada, it says. And Health Canada took longer to approve every new cancer drug (apart from one) than the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where the median review time was 182 days compared to 356 days in Canada.

Moreover, by the end of March 2012, almost 60% of these 24 approved drugs were not covered under public drug plans in any Canadian province, says the Institute.

Rumor: Nokia to Unveil "Phi" and "Arrow" Windows Phone 8 Phones Sept. 5

Two weeks before a packed September 5th, tidbits about Nokia and Microsoft?s joint event are starting to leak out. According to the Verge?s sources, Nokia is planning to unveil a pair of new Lumia-branded Windows Phone 8 handsets, code-named the Phi and the Arrow.

The Phi is the flagship model and is said to sport a curved glass design similar to the one found on WP7 Lumia phones. Yesterday, WMPowerUser also identified the Nokia Phi by name, citing Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin, who claims the phone will have a 4.7-inch AMOLED display and a microSD card slot. Assuming the reports prove true, it will be an AT&T exclusive. ?

The Nokia Arrow sports more modest (yet unidentified) mainstream specs and should pop up at both AT&T and T-Mobile.

Yesterday, we reported that a Nokia Windows Phone 8 handset will make its way to Verizon later this year. The Verge?s sources claim that particular phone ? code-named the Atlas ? won?t be at the big September 5th gala, but it should be pretty much identical to the Arrow phone being announced.

UBS Dislikes Nasdaq's Facebook IPO Payback Plan

UBS AG (UBS, UBSN.VX)) decried a proposal from Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. (NDAQ) to make up losses for firms damaged in the Facebook Inc. (FB) stock-market debut, calling the plan "woefully inadequate."

The Swiss banking group, which pegged its own losses in the episode at $356 million, in a letter urged regulators weighing the Nasdaq OMX plan to reconsider the exchange company's cap on damages payable due to problems with its technology.

UBS joined a growing chorus of Wall Street firms calling on the Securities and Exchange Commission to push Nasdaq OMX to boost compensation for traders and brokers that took losses trading in the Facebook flotation May 18.

A torrent of cancellations and changes to standing orders that morning overwhelmed Nasdaq OMX's usual process of matching up orders to form the initial trade in Facebook's shares, and steps taken to open the stock resulted in millions of dollars' worth of trades lingering unconfirmed for hours.

Without confirmations from Nasdaq OMX on the trades, firms were forced to guess at their positions in the newly minted stock, and in some cases found themselves far off the mark when confirmations were received.

Nasdaq OMX last month proposed a $62 million, all-cash compensation package that would be split up among afflicted firms. Estimates of Wall Street's total losses in the session have been put at some $500 million.

"We strongly urge the Commission to reconsider the level of the proposed cap in light of the actual damages caused by Nasdaq in its mismanagement of the Facebook IPO," UBS officials wrote in a letter to the SEC dated Wednesday.

UBS also told regulators that Nasdaq OMX's method of calculating which trades would be covered by its payback proposal was too narrow, and objected to the idea that firms may have to waive legal claims against the exchange group should they seek coverage under Nasdaq's plan.

A spokesman for Nasdaq OMX declined comment.
