Arduino hack gives a second screen to Android phones, isn't very useful (video)

Who knows why tech tinkerers do what they do. We're just happy to see those idle hands try the untested. Like this latest Arduino hack from modder Michael of Nootropic Design, who's seen fit to rig a 16 x 32 LED matrix up to an Android phone for use as a secondary display. The outputted video, downscaled via OpenCV software to an appropriate resolution and 12-bit color, is admittedly unimpressive, as it chugs along at a paltry four frames per second. But that's not the point of this can-do experiment -- it's all about the possibilities, however blurry and pointless they may be (although, we're sure Barbara Walters would beg to differ). Ready to see this modjob in motion? Then head on past the break for a brief video demo.

APNewsBreak: Bachmann says she'll seek 4th term (AP)

MINNEAPOLIS ? Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann announced Wednesday she will seek a fourth term in the U.S. House following her failed presidential bid.

Bachmann declared her plans in an interview with The Associated Press. The Republican congresswoman had been mum on her plans since folding her presidential campaign after a poor showing in the Iowa caucuses earlier this month.

"I'm looking forward to coming back and bringing a strong, powerful voice to Washington, D.C.," Bachmann said.

Bachmann will be a formidable candidate in Minnesota's 6th District, where other Republican hopefuls had stood aside until she made a decision on running for re-election. Some experts had speculated that Bachmann might instead turn to a career in talk media.

Bachmann is a potent fundraiser who raised $13.5 million in her last House race, but would likely start from scratch after the presidential campaign. A campaign finance report that would show how much money she can bring to the race isn't due until the end of the month.

Bachmann also faces uncertainty over how her district will be reshaped. One redistricting plan put forth by Democrats would throw her into a race with Rep. Betty McCollum, a six-term Democrat who represents the St. Paul area. A special redistricting panel is due to issue maps late next month.

Bachmann was an early media favorite in the chase for the GOP presidential nomination after winning the Iowa straw poll in midsummer, but she eventually faded.

Her announcement came in an interview to react to President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech. Just as she did on the campaign trail, Bachmann criticized Obama for "doubling down on failures that didn't work."

"We have to radically scale back on government spending, we have to radically cut back on debt accumulation," Bachmann said.

Stat Alert: More connected phones than computers in key markets, says Google

There are obvious stats, bizarre ones, and then the good old informative ones. New data from Google revealed by Ad Age, falls into the latter category. According to Goog's numbers, more people have a mobile internet-capable device than a PC or laptop in the five key markets it tested (US, UK, Germany, France and Japan). In the US, this figure is nearly 10% more, some 76% against 68%. The numbers were taken in September and October last year, which means any impact Christmas may have had won't be taken into account. The trend away from featurephones towards smartphones is also drilled home, but that won't be news to many people 'round these parts. No matter how you connect these days, any savvy netizen will tell you: it's quality, not quantity that counts anyway.

MS judge to hear AG's challenge of Barbour pardons (AP)

JACKSON, Miss. ? The Mississippi attorney general's office says it has not been able to find a convicted killer pardoned by Haley Barbour during his final days as governor.

Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green ordered five former inmates who worked as Governor's Mansion trusties and were pardoned by Barbour to appear in court Monday, but authorities haven't located Joseph Ozment. He was convicted in 1994 of killing a man during a robbery.

Green scheduled a 3 p.m. CST hearing to consider arguments from Attorney General Jim Hood, who's challenging some of Barbour's 198 end-of-term pardons.

Hood wants to return recently freed inmates to prison. Most of those who could lose pardons were out of prison before Barbour's action.

Republican Barbour has accused Hood, a Democrat, of partisan politics.

Two more bodies found in cruise ship wreck

More bodies were found over the weekend aboard the cruise ship that capsized off the coast of Italy, raising the official death toll to 13. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

Updated at 12:20 p.m. ET: GIGLIO, Italy -- Italian officials say two more bodies have been recovered from the capsized Costa Concordia, according to the Associated Press, bringing the death toll of the accident to 15.

The national civil protection agency official in charge of the search said Monday that divers recovered the bodies of two women from the ship's Internet cafe.

The recovery of the two brings to 17 the number of known missing. However, officials over the weekend said it appeared unregistered guests were on board at the time of the accident, meaning the number of officially missing could increase.

Meanwhile, Italian officials say experts can begin pumping fuel from a capsized cruise ship while divers continue the search for people still missing.

Admiral Ilarione dell'Anna said Monday that the fuel removal could begin as early as Tuesday.

The national civil protection agency official in charge of the search said that would continue "as long as it is possible to inspect whatever can be inspected."

The decision to carry out both operations in tandem was made after it was determined that the Costa Concordia did not risk falling to a lower seabed.

"The ship is stable," said Franco Gabrielli, the national civil protection official in charge of the rescue effort. "There is no problem or danger that it is about to drop onto much lower seabed."

The pristine sea around Giglio, where the ship with 4,200 people aboard rammed a reef and sliced open its hull on Jan. 13 before turning over on its side, is a prized fishing area and part of a protected area for whales and dolphins.

Identifying victims
On Sunday divers found the body of a woman on a submerged deck near the bow of the vessel.

Earlier, Italian authorities raised the possibility that the real number of the missing was unknown because some unregistered passengers might have been aboard. As of Monday, 17 people remain missing, but that number could be higher.

Divers find the body of a woman in the ship as pressure grows to speed up the salvage operation. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

"There could have been X persons who we don't know about who were inside, who were clandestine" passengers aboard the ship, Gabrielli told reporters at a briefing on the island of Giglio.

Gabrielli said that relatives of a Hungarian woman have told Italian authorities that she had telephoned them from aboard the ship and that they haven't heard from her since the accident. He said it was possible that a woman's body pulled from the wreckage by divers on Saturday might be that of the unregistered passenger. NBC News' Michelle Kosinski reported that female victim found Sunday was around 25 years old, but it was still unknown if she is the unregistered passenger.

In addition to the body recovered on Sunday, the body found on Saturday and those of three men found a few days earlier, have yet to be identified, because the corpses were badly decomposed after so much time in the water. Gabrielli said they have identified the other eight bodies: four French, an Italian, a Hungarian, a German and a Spanish national.

Investigation continues
Meanwhile, the operators of the Costa Concordia faced questions over their share of the blame for the shipwreck.

Captain Francesco Schettino is accused of steering the cruise ship too close to shore while performing a maneuver known as a "salute" in which liners draw up very close to land to make a display.

Schettino, who is charged with multiple manslaughter and with abandoning ship before the evacuation of 4,200 passengers and crew was complete, has told prosecutors he had been instructed to perform the maneuver by operator Costa Cruises.

Schettino said the fatal maneuver was originally intended to bring the ship half a mile from the shore, "but then we brought it to 0.28" (of a nautical mile), he said.

Investigators have said the actual point of impact was much closer to the shore but establishing the exact sequence of events could be complicated by problems with the recording equipment used to track the ship's progress.

DigitalGlobe

The Costa Concordia ran aground Jan. 13 off the coast of Italy, resulting in the evacuation of thousands of passengers as the ship began heavily listing.

Schettino said the black box on board had been broken for two weeks and he had asked for it to be repaired, in vain.

According to transcripts of his hearing with investigators leaked to Italian newspapers, Schettino told magistrates Costa had insisted on the maneuver to please passengers and attract publicity.

"It was planned, we were supposed to have done it a week earlier but it was not possible because of bad weather," Schettino said, according to the Corriere della Sera daily.

"They insisted. They said: 'We do tourist navigation, we have to be seen, get publicity and greet the island'."

Costa Cruises Chief Executive Pier Luigi Foschi has previously said that Schettino delayed issuing the SOS and evacuation orders and gave false information to the company headquarters.

"Personally, I think he wasn't honest with us," Foschi told Corriere della Sera Friday. He said the first phone conversation between Schettino and Ferrarini took place 20 minutes after the ship hit the rock.

Foschi, who visited Giglio Sunday, declined to respond to Schettino's latest comments.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

(AP) ? "The Artist" followed its Golden Globe win by taking top honors at the Producers Guild Awards on Saturday, as the silent film continues its unlikely run toward Oscar night.

Producer Thomas Langmann received the award handed out at the Beverly Hilton by the Producers Guild of America, as "The Artist" beat out George Clooney's family drama and another Oscar favorite, "The Descendants."

"The Artist" won best musical or comedy at Sunday's Golden Globes and "The Descendants" won best drama along with a best actor nod for Clooney, making the movies likely rivals for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

The other nominees in the movie category were "War Horse," ''The Help," ''Bridesmaids," ''Hugo," ''The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," ''Midnight in Paris," ''Moneyball" and another Clooney movie, "The Ides of March."

Along with honors from other Hollywood professional groups such as actors, directors and writers guilds, the producer prizes have become part of the preseason sorting out contenders for the Oscars, whose nominations come out Jan. 24.

HBO's saga of mobsters in Prohibition-era Atlantic City "Boardwalk Empire" won the producers' award for television drama series, keeping AMC's "Mad Men" from winning its fourth straight PGA Award.

A team of seven producers including Martin Scorcese received the award for "Boardwalk Empire," which also beat out Showtime's "Dexter," CBS's "The Good Wife," and another HBO series, "Game of Thrones."

The ABC sitcom "Modern Family" took the award for best comedy series for the second straight year, beating "30 Rock," ''The Big Bang Theory," ''Glee," and "Parks and Recreation."

Other winners at the PGA awards include PBS's "Downton Abbey" for long-form television, "The Adventures of Tintin" for animated film, "Beats, Rhymes & Life" for movie documentary and "The Colbert Report" for talk and live entertainment shows.

Republican apologizes, says wasn't urging Obama's death (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? A Kansas Republican leader under fire for sending an email invoking a bible verse to suggest that Democratic President Barack Obama's "days be few in number" apologized on Thursday but said that he would not resign.

Critics said the email forwarded by Speaker of the State House Mike O'Neal, that was later published by the Lawrence Journal-World newspaper, called for Obama's death.

"The forward contained a single verse and was only intended as election commentary regarding the president's days in office. I have apologized, and I am sincerely sorry," O'Neal said in an email.

O'Neal's email sent to friends and colleagues cited part of Psalm 109:8 which in some interpretations reads: 'Let his days be few; and let another take his office.'

The following verse reads, "May his children be orphans and his wife a widow."

Two pastors delivered a petition signed by 30,000 people demanding that the speaker resign. O'Neal issued an apology, but his communications director said the speaker would not be resigning.

"He is using sacred scripture to flippantly suggest people should be praying for the death of the president," said Michael Sherrard, a spokesman for Faithful America, an online interfaith community based in Washington that organized the petition.

Rasmussen Survey: Romney, Gingrich Top GOP Poll

Newt Gingrich has pulled within easy striking distance of Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney in the race for the GOP nomination, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll released Wednesday.

The poll of 1,000 likely GOP primary voters nationwide on Tuesday, the day after Gingrich delivered a highly praised debate performance, shows Romney with 30 percent support and Gingrich closing at 27 percent. Given the margin of error, plus or minus 3 percent, the two candidates are virtually even.

Former House Speaker Gingrich jumped 11 points from the 16 percent support he had just two weeks ago. Former Massachusetts Gov. Romney?s support, on the other hand, remains at about the same level. Rasmussen pollsters said the debate Monday night seems to have made the difference.

Rick Santorum, on the other hand, has seen a big drop in support. The former Pennsylvania senator was in second place two weeks ago but now has dipped to 15 percent support.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul had 13 percent, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry was last at 4 percent.

Four percent said they liked some other candidate, and 7 percent were undecided.

About 70 percent said they think Romney ultimately will get the nomination, compared with just 13 percent who think Gingrich will be the party?s choice.

Although 43 percent think Romney has the best shot of beating President Barack Obama, 29 percent now say Gingrich is the most likely GOP candidate to do so. That is a 12 percent rise for Gingrich since two weeks ago.
