Mankato, Minn. ? Dana (Vetter) Simonson (pictured), who graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato, on May 4 with a bachelor?s degree in economics, is one of four finalists in the International Atlantic Economic Society?s prestigious 2012 Undergraduate Student Research Paper Competition.

Simonson prepared her research paper, titled ?Has the Switch from Food Stamps to the EBT Card Affected an Individual?s Decision to Participate in the Food Stamp Program?,? for a course (Economics 482, Senior Research Seminar) at Minnesota State Mankato. Simonson?s undergraduate research supervisor was Minnesota State Mankato assistant professor Ihsuan Li.

Simonson is a 2006 Owatonna (Minn.) High School graduate and the daughter of Greg and Marilyn Vetter of Owatonna. Dana (Vetter) Simonson is currently employed as a financial analyst for IBM in Rochester, Minn.

Simonson submitted her research paper this spring for consideration in the IAES competition, and the four finalists were announced Aug. 15.

The best paper award will be announced Oct. 6 during the 74th International Atlantic Economic Society conference in Montreal, Canada, on Oct. 4-7, 2012. Each finalist will receive a commemorative plaque, and the winner of the competition will receive a $500 check and have his or her paper published in the March 2013 or June 2013 issue of the ?Atlantic Economic Journal.?

Out of 50 submissions to the competition from 10 different countries worldwide, Simonson and a student from Stanford University were the only two students from United States universities to be selected as finalists. The other two finalists were from Aarhus University in Denmark and the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. Of the four universities represented, Minnesota State Mankato is the only non-Ph.D. granting institution.

Submissions from the United States came from students attending Stanford, Princeton, George Washington University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Michigan, Boston College, Brown University, Rutgers and others.

Each submitted paper to the competition had names, university and country affiliations removed, and each was judged by a blind panel of nine judges from the Czech Republic, China, Korea, India, Greece, Poland and the United States.

The other three finalists and the title of their research papers are:
-- Boris Georgiev (Aarhus University, Denmark), ?Implications of Public Debt on Economic Growth and Development?
-- Colin Gray (Stanford University), ?Responding to a Monetary Superpower: Investigating the Behavioral Spillovers of U.S. Monetary Policy?
-- Jia Yi Leong (University of Warwick, U.K.), ?Price Dispersion in Online Grocery Stores: An Analysis of the UK Market?

The International Atlantic Economic Society began conducting its annual ?Best Undergraduate Paper Award? in 2007. The first five winners came from the following schools: London School of Economics (U.K.) in 2007, 2009 and 2010; Columbia University (New York) in 2008 and Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in 2011.

According to its website at www.iaes.org, the International Atlantic Economic Society (founded in 1973) identified a need for increased global communication among economists across continents. Through its two refereed publications and two conferences a year, IAES promotes the dissemination of economic and financial research within the international community.

More information about the Department of Economics at Minnesota State Mankato is available online at www.sbs.mnsu.edu/economics/.

Minnesota State Mankato, a comprehensive university, is part of the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities system, a system of 31 public colleges and universities with 54 campuses in 47 communities throughout the state of Minnesota.

Glossary

So, this thread is dedicated to defining all of the terms and such things that will arise in the roleplay, everyone is free to come and add their own things here too. This is just to start us off. . . .

The Following of the Great Mother

The dominate church within Portum Animas. Founded around the belief that the destruction of Viridis Mater was the doing of humanity, and the notion that the planet itself saved all the lives that came to be upon Manus Luna, the Following was once a benevolent sect of people who believed in what they preached. Over the years, and after the founding of Portum Animas, the church served as a guiding influence in the development and building of the city. Due to their deep-rooted influence within the city, the general populace of Portum Animas still finds themselves feeling a connection to the Following. As such, it?s common and easy for the church to sway the opinions and beliefs of people nowadays.

However, in the recent years, no one has quite come to realize just how very different the church has become since its initial founding. Matters regarding the Gifted and such are a very cut and dry topic as far as the Following is concerned; they strictly view the Gifted as being influenced and as people who?ve been corrupted by Discordic; the being they view as their devil.

In line with their supposed will to do good for people, the Following offers up healing services for people who have been injured or who suffer from physical problems by means of the Passively Gifted that work for them.

The Gifted

A sect of the population within Portum Animas whose natural powers have taken a turn for the drastic. Unlike those who are normal, these people have developed their powers to inhuman levels. These are people who are considered to be dangerous and are called out by the Following, and are considered to be evil, and are named as such. In order for the Following to maintain control over the populace, and to keep panic from inciting, they give out a false explanation for why the Gifted are born, and why it is that their powers are so different from everyone else?s.

The Gifted are not treated as human by any means if they are discovered as such. The Following has twisted the minds of so many people in Portum Animas, that even families will turn against their own if they are found out as a Gifted. They have no rights to speak of, none at all. More often than not, if a Gifted is discovered out and reported to the proper authorities, they are detained, and taken in for ?cleansing.? Because it is believed by so many that the Gifted have had their senses warped and distorted by Discordic, and that they have been twisted to want to cause misfortune and chaos with their powers, the Gifted are feared. Greatly feared by many.

Once a Gifted has been detained by the church and government, that is often the last time they are seen by their families and friends. Despite the fact that they are suppose to taken in to undergo a process called a ?cleansing,? it is a known fact that most who have to go through this process do not survive, as it is explained by the church that cleansing one of Discordic is a dangerous and near fatal process. . . . Those Gifted who have been successfully cleansed, and survive often wind up going into service of the Following, as their powers will have taken a turn from destructive, and with their souls freed of Discordic?s evil and corruption, they would?ve seen the ?light,? and come to serve the Following in order to absolve themselves of their sins. Those Gifted who?ve survived their cleansings are noted as ?Passive Gifted? due to the change their powers undergo.

Cleansing

A process employed by the Following in order to purge the evils of Discordic from the souls of those he has corrupted; otherwise known as the Gifted. The exact details and steps of this . . . process are unknown but to a select few individuals within the church who have been trained specifically to carry it out. It is said to be a very hard, very thing to both undergo and to carry out on a person, as it pits the employer?s soul against the corrupted soul of the Gifted. The Following explains a cleansing to be so harsh due to what must happen in order for Discordic?s grasp upon the afflicted?s soul to be relinquished. It is said that during this process, the soul of the one carrying it out and undergoing it must be called from their body, and because an average person has not had the training to undergo a separation of their soul from their body, when Discordic?s hold has been terminated upon them . . . the soul slips away.

It loses touch with its body and ascends to the afterlife, leaving the Gifted as good as dead. There are a few select people though who?ve been strong enough to remain alive through this, and have their souls cleaned of evil?s touch. These are the Passively Gifted; often after they?ve undergone their cleansing, they come to aid the Following with their changed powers. They will have gone from possessing powers of destruction, to being capable of ?constructive? things, such as being able to heal others. It is believed by many that those individuals who?ve been trained to carry out the cleansing process are themselves some of the few individuals who managed to survive it, and become a Passively Gifted.

Passively Gifted

These are the Gifted who?ve undergone the cleansing process and managed to survive it intact. With their souls eliminated of evil, they are more or less always found working for the Following, using their purified powers to go good. Unlike their selves prior, they possess no destructive powers or abilities that could be used to harm anyone, instead, their powers are useful for doing only things such as healing wounds and such. Healing services are offered by the church because of the powers of these people.

Harmonia

The Great Mother whom is worshipped by the Following, she is the central figure in their stories and religion. Believed to be the being which embodies the will of the planet itself, she is seen as a benevolent mother figure in every story, and the Following believes she saved humanity from itself long ago, and still loves them dearly. She is the patron Goddess for the Following, and the majority of Portum Animas honors her.

Discordic

The being whom is believed to have been spawned of humanity?s own evils a millennium ago. A destructive and chaotic force, he is viewed as a demonic presence who very nearly destroyed all of humankind before, and is thought to be the reason that the world below Manus Luna vanished into a sea of toxic clouds. Despite being defeated at the hands of Harmonia, Discordic is still viewed as an active threat in the world; so long as humanity exists, so will Discordic?s evil. Because it is explained and believed that Discordic is the reason that the Gifted exist, the Gifted are regarded with terrible treatment and are viewed as an incarnation of Discordic himself.

The Sanctified

These are the people who carry out the process of Cleansing within the Following. They are sparse and few, and have been rigidly trained in order to carry out their jobs without a problem. These people are rumored and are believed to be some of the few Gifted who managed to survive a Cleansing themselves, and are truly thought to be Passively Gifted individuals.

Heineken to launch two new beers in key U.S. market

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Heineken NV is launching two new beers -- Amstel Wheat and Tecate Michelada -- in the United States next month, as the Dutch brewer works to improve its business in the key U.S. market.

The new beers arrive as the world's No. 3 beer maker, based in the Netherlands, aims to rely less on Europe, where beer drinking is expected to remain sluggish as the economy continues to struggle.

In recent years, many beer drinkers have switched to wine and spirits, as distilleries unleashed a flood of new products. Beer makers have not been as innovative, and Heineken not as innovative as other brewers, said Lesya Lysyj, Heineken USA's chief marketing officer, in an interview.

"We've been an under-innovator in an under-innovated category," Lysyj said. "Our business was not on a growth trajectory over the last several years."

But Heineken was not alone.

Overall, brewers sold 205.8 million barrels of beer in the United States in 2011, a decline of 1.5 percent, according to Beer Marketer's Insights. That marked the third straight year of declines, though sales in some other European markets, such as Britain, have been even weaker, said Benj Steinman, editor of the trade publication.

Yet Steinman said it looks like 2012 could be flat or slightly up.

Amstel Wheat will be sold in bottles in the Northeast, Chicago and Minneapolis, after a year-long test of the beer on draught. It is the brand's first U.S. line extension in more than a decade.

As for Tecate, a Mexican beer Heineken acquired through its 2010 purchase of Femsa's beer business, the new product will be the first canned, ready-to-drink michelada sold in the United States. A michelada is a beer cocktail popular in Mexico that combines beer with lime, salt, spices and hot sauce.

The new product will be available throughout the western and central regions of the United States.

After years of declining U.S. sales, Heineken is now seeing sales grow, Lysyj said, helped by a greater focus on marketing its flagship brand.

Heineken also has its hands full with a takeover battle in Southeast Asia that for the last six weeks has pitted the Netherlands-based brewer against Thai Beverage for control of Tiger beer maker Asia Pacific Breweries . Red Bulls salvage tie with United

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:01 p.m. ET Aug. 29, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - Wilman Conde scored in the 88th minute to lift the New York Red Bulls to a 2-2 draw against D.C. United on Wednesday night.

Joel Lindpere also scored for New York (13-7-7) on a night that, until very late, looked to be remembered for Dwayne De Rosario's 100th career MLS goal.

De Rosario scored in the 68th minute to pass the milestone and put United ahead 2-1. Nick DeLeon also scored for D.C. (12-9-5), which tied a club record set in 2007 by extending its home unbeaten streak to 13.

New York stretched its unbeaten streak to four matches as it closed to within a point of first-place Sporting Kansas City. The Red Bulls drew 1-1 at Sporting on Sunday.

With time running out and New York pressing for the tying score, a half-clearance trickled outside the 18-yard-box and into the Conde's path. The defender struck a knuckling blast with his first touch into the top right corner and beyond Bill Hamid's dive for his first goal of the season.

De Rosario had put D.C. ahead 20 mijnutes earlier on a header of DeLeon's cross from the right made easier by a poorly timed run by goalkeeper Bill Gaudette. Instead of remaining in his goal, Gaudette came to try and punch away the cross, but was beaten by De Rosario, who had an empty net to aim at.

With the goal, De Rosario became the seventh player, and second active one, to pass the 100-goal plateau in the league's 17-year history.

Lindpere scored in the 19th minute on a drive from the left side that appeared to deflect off Bill Hamid's side and into the right post.

Two minutes later, DeLeon struck back on a somewhat softly struck side-footed volley of De Rosario's cross that somehow squeezed beneath Gaudettes dive to the left.

Do You Wear Headphones When You Ride Your Bike [Chatroom]

Google Maps on Android has a new feature that will give you turn-by-turn directions when you're riding a bike. But here's the thing: unless you have a phone with the loudest speaker ever, you have to wear headphones. That sounds very unsafe! Our own Chris Mascari said he wears headphones when he rides a bike, but he's an idiot, and might be an exception. What about you? Would you wear headphones while riding just for this feature? In their August editorial, the PLOS Medicine Editors reflect on a recent Policy Forum article by Jason Corburn and Alison Cohen*, which describes the need for urban health equity indicators to guide public health policy in cities and urban areas. The Editors focus on the need for better air quality data for the world's cities because many cities with the worst airborne particulate levels are in low- and middle-income countries and often have limited data. Worryingly, the World Health Organization estimates that 1.34 million premature deaths were at attributable to outdoor air pollution in 2008.

The Editors note that, "for [air quality] indicators to be effective they must be context-specific and relevant, and be made available transparently so that they can be open to interpretation and re-evaluation."
