World News - 'Happy tears' as Peru miners are rescued after six ...

Martin Mejia / AP

An unidentified miner, left, is helped by an emergency worker after being rescued from the Cabeza de Negro gold-and-copper mine in Yauca del Rosario, Peru, on Wednesday. They had been trapped there since April 6.

By msnbc.com news services

ICA, Peru --?Nine workers trapped inside an abandoned mine in southern Peru were rescued and brought to daylight early Wednesday after spending almost a week underground.

The men had been stuck about 656 feet below ground since the so-called "wildcat" copper-and-gold mine partially collapsed on Thursday. They had been receiving oxygen and liquids through a giant hose that was in place before the accident at the Cabeza de Negro site.

"All of them are healthy but obviously dehydrated and dizzy," President Ollanta Humala said. "They need to get used to the sun still, that's why they are wearing sunglasses."

Miner Jesus Japatinta said he was overwhelmed after walking out alive.

"I spilled tears, happy tears," he said.

Humala, who witnessed the rescue operation, warned informal miners to stay away from abandoned mines like Cabeza de Negro, saying they were dangerous.

The mine?is located 4,400 feet above sea level on?a mountainside about 175 miles southeast of Lima.

On Sunday, Peru's government appealed to mining companies for heavy equipment. Until then, several dozen rescue workers had used pickaxes and shovels to try to remove the 26 feet of collapsed earth and rock blocking the entrance of the mine.

The cave-in spurred calls to formalize Peru's vast informal mining sector, which generates as much as $2 billion a year in income, according to private estimates.

Mining is the main engine of Peru's economy, accounting for more than 60 percent of its exports. It is the world's No. 2 copper exporter after neighboring Chile and ranks sixth in gold exports.

According to official figures, 52 miners died in Peru last year in work-related accidents, a third of them in mine shaft collapses.

Reuters and The Associated Press contibuted to this report.

Van Der Beek: 'Dawson's' 'paid almost nothing'

By Sean Daly, TODAY.com contributor

Bob D'amico / ABC

James Van Der Beek is finally cashing in on ?Dawson?s Creek? -- a show the actor says paid ?almost nothing? during its five season run.

?There was no residual money,? he told TODAY.com.? ?I was 20.? It was a bad contract. I saw almost nothing from that.?

Now the newly remarried father of two is playing a fictionalized version of his post-teen heartthrob self on the new ABC comedy ?Don't Trust the B? in Apartment 23.?

?I auditioned against six other James Van Der Beeks for this role,? he joked when the show was first presented for TV critics last winter. ?By default, it was me.?

On the series -- premiering Wednesday -- Van Der Beek pokes fun at his WB days by seducing women with Dawson Leery?s trademark flannel shirts and Paula Cole?s tune??I Don?t Wanna Wait? (the ?Dawson?s Creek? theme song).

Van Der Beek, 36, said he signed on to play the former lover and BFF of New York scam artist Chloe (Krysten Ritter) -- who terrorizes, but then befriends her new roommate June (Dreama Walker) -- ?when the (?Dawson?s Creek?) money ran out.?

But don?t feel too sorry for him:?According to documents obtained by TMZ?during his divorce from actress Heather McComb,?the actor?was still pulling in a hefty $49,343 a month (with $4,100 going to charity) as of 2010!

While Van Der Beek has continued to appear in movies, he admits it wasn?t always easy to poke fun at himself -- or the character that made him once so famous.

?You are incredibly fortunate whatever success falls on you, which is what happened with me,? he said.? ?But as soon as that happens, I think there is a tendency to feel like you have something to lose. Or something to protect. That can often lead to taking yourself a little too seriously.?

?It is very easy if you have all the money in the world to just sit back and coast. But if you realized that you are going to have to start providing for yourself and for your family, it really forces you to buckle down.?

In recent years, he said, ?I started saying yes to things that I had been saying no to previously.?I really passed on a lot of things out of fear or ?What are people going to think?? or ?Is this what I really want to do???You can find a million reasons to say no to something.?Then I got to a point where I thought, ?What am I doing?? And I started saying yes to anything that sounded fun.???

Along the way, Van Der Beek admitted he was too quick to say no to many projects.

?There were meetings for things that would have kept me a little more relevant,? he recalled.? ?But I thought, ?I don?t really want to do another horror movie, do I??? And, of course, doing ?Amityville Horror? would have been a really good career move at the time!?

"Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23" premires on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. on ABC.

Turkmen president wins on racing track

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan (AP) -- Turkmenistan's authoritarian leader has proven he doesn't only win elections easily, coming first in a car race he wasn't even supposed to take part in.

President Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov drove to the racing track in a Bugatti sports car Saturday morning ostensibly to give his blessing to the former Soviet Central Asian nation's maiden automotive competition.

While an event presenter introduced the president, he received a request nobody in Turkmenistan would be likely turn down. "Can I take part?" Berdymukhamedov asked.

Before long, the president had changed into racing gear, entered the zippy and diminutive Turkish-made Volkicar automobile and promptly proceeded to record the best time in the time-trial challenge.

Announcers at the race said the winning car will be given to the national sports museum.

The apparently choreographed display appears to be another episode in an ongoing state project to cast the president as an effortlessly competent man of action.

Berdymukhamedov initially favored a low-key style after taking power in the wake of his eccentric predecessor Saparmurat Niyazov's death in late 2006, but his public persona has become subject of an increasingly grand mythology. He won presidential elections in February with 97 percent of the vote.

His choice to travel to Saturday's race in a Bugatti was in stark contrast with his preferred mode of transport during the elections, when he drove to a polling station with his family in a cramped Soviet-era Zhiguli - a car much derided in the West for its unreliability.

The government is loudly proclaiming the need to turn Turkmenistan into a sporting power at the behest of the fitness-obsessed president, and the race was touted as the opening salvo in the country's plan to develop competitive automotive sports.

The energy-rich desert nation, which gained independence amid the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, has never won a medal in the summer Olympic Games.

Berdymukhamedov's predecessor, Niyazov, was celebrated in a cult of personality that saw cities, streets, months, periodicals and public organizations after the leader and his family members and made a two-volume spiritual tome he wrote mandatory reading.

In a vein reminiscent of Niyazov's title of Turkmenbashi, or father of all Turkmens, state media now routinely refers to Berdymukhamedov as Arkadag, which is Turkmen for protector.

Legal concern: Muslim Brotherhood files last-minute back-up ...

The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's top political force, has put up its back-up presidential candidate just a day before the doors of the Electoral Commission closed. They fear their first pick may be disqualified from the race on legal grounds.

?In case the Brotherhood?s first choice, Khairat al-Shater, is found ineligible, Mohamed Mursi will be the candidate from the group.?

The primary nominee of the Islamist group, al-Shater, has a criminal record. In 2006 a military court sentenced him to seven years in prison on charges of terrorism and money laundering. He was released from prison under amnesty last March, after the end of the regime of Hosni Mubarak.

The Muslim Brotherhood, whose Freedom and Justice Party won the most seats in parliamentary elections earlier this year,? insists that al-Shater, the group?s chief strategist and financier, has ?no legal hurdles in his way to Egypt?s top job.?

?There are attempts to create barriers for some candidates,? the Brotherhood stated, adding that there are those who want the former regime to return to power.

The Brotherhood?s legal expert Abdel-Maksoud said that al-Shater was fully exonerated by a Supreme Military Court order and his eligibility to run for the country?s top post is completely unquestionable.

However, his candidacy remains doubtful because according to Egyptian legislation, those who have or ever had problems with the law cannot run for the presidency.

Separately, on Saturday the electoral commission said that Salafist politician Hazem Abu Ismail would probably be disqualified from running because his mother may have held US citizenship and this is contrary to the constitution. According to the law, candidates? parents and wives must all be Egyptians.

Meanwhile, all of Egypt's presidential hopefuls have now submitted their applications to fight it out for the vacated seat of Hosni Mubarak. The first round of the vote slated for May 23-24. If no candidate gets more than half the vote in the first round, the top two candidates will continue the race on 16-17 June.

All candidates the Egyptians will be choosing from can be divided into, essentially, three groups.

The first group is the liberals, supported mostly by young people and the revolutionary-minded. The second group has connections with the camp of ousted Hosni Mubarak. They include Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak?s ex-prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq, Amr Moussa, former foreign minister and ex-head of the Arab League and Omar Suleiman, Egypt's head of intelligence for more than 18 years. Suleiman initially said he would not run for the presidential post, but changed his mind few days later. Suleiman explained that he reconsidered due to popular demand.

The third group consists of the candidates of Islamists parties, such as Muslim Brotherhood, Salafist party and Gamaa Islamiya.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), which took power when Mubarak was ousted, has said it will hand over power to civilian rule after a president is elected.

Campaigning for the presidential election is not officially allowed until after the final list of candidates is published. Formation of this list may take up to two weeks.

These are the first presidential elections since Hosni Mubarak was ousted as a result of a bloody revolution over a year ago.

Hyla Cass, M.D.: Trauma Release For Enhanced Health And ...

We are constantly hearing of people who have been traumatized by such situations as childhood abuse, or being in war zones, and then suffering for years afterward with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and exhibiting such problems as depression, anxiety, nightmares, insomnia, impaired relationships and inability to hold down a job. We see "shell-shocked" veterans who leap up in panic at the sound of a car backfiring or even at the sound of a load of dishes being dropped in a restaurant, as I recently saw. We are now looking at new and effective solutions.

There is an emerging new category of therapies known as "energy psychology" (EP). While it's unfamiliar to most psychologists, counselors and helping professionals, let alone members of the general public, this is changing rapidly as recent clinical research continues to build the case for its effectiveness.

Energy psychology is both a clinical and a self-help modality that combines psychological and physical processes for bringing about therapeutic change. While it is based on established scientific principles that govern psychology, the approach also incorporates concepts and techniques from non-Western systems for healing and spiritual development. Its most frequently used methods combine the stimulation of acupuncture points (by tapping on them or holding them) while actively thinking about a specific psychological issue.

Sound strange? It may, but it can work! The field of EP is fast growing due to its ability to provide swift results with no abreaction (e.g., a severe emotional reaction) in most cases -- particularly with trauma patients. For instance, in the spring of 2006, 50 orphans of the Rwandan genocide, many of whom had witnessed their parents brutally murdered by machete 12 years earlier, were treated with a single session of Thought Field Therapy (TFT). Following this session, scores on a PTSD checklist completed by caretakers and on a self-rated PTSD checklist had significantly decreased. The number of participants exceeding the PTSD cutoffs decreased from 100 percent to 6 percent. Retesting a year later showed that the improvements held. There have been many other outcome studies describing the effectiveness of EP methods in quickly and permanently reducing maladaptive fear responses to traumatic memories and related cues.

Even so, the approach has been controversial. Some consider EP to fall into the category of pseudoscience. This is, in part, because the mechanisms by which EP works have not been fully established. That, too, is changing.

In his 2010 "Rapid Treatment of PTSD" article in Psychotherapy: Theory, Research, Practice, Training, psychologist David Feinstein speculates that adding acupressure point stimulation to psychological exposure is unusually effective in its speed and power because signals are sent directly to the emotional core of the brain known as the amygdala, responsible for the processing and memory of emotional reactions, resulting in rapid reduction of maladaptive fear. The more we learn about brain function, electromagnetic energies, and neurochemistry, the more evidence there is to support this explanation.

Another possibility is that energy psychology techniques share certain characteristics with EMDR , hypnosis and other therapies that use highly-focused patterns of treatment. First, the client is asked to pick a specific difficult memory, then rate how distressing it is with a SUDs (Subjective Units of Distress) number between 0-10. They follow this with a therapeutic operation such as tapping on meridian points (related to acupuncture points), bilateral stimulation (tapping alternate knees, or moving their eyes back and forth), or the use of imagery. The client is then asked to report on his/her experience as well as the current SUDs level. If the SUDs is zero, the therapy is essentially done for this target issue. If it is not zero, whatever remains becomes the new target of the intervention. The therapeutic operation is performed again, and a new SUDs assessment is taken. This continues until the SUDs is zero or close to zero.

A recent randomized controlled trial (soon to be published in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease) has shown EFT to significantly lower the stress hormone, cortisol, and self-reported psychological symptoms after a single treatment session. It's exciting to see more robust research validating years of anecdotal positive results with EP -- many of which, as in the case of the Rwandan orphan study or the rapid relief of PTSD symptoms experienced by U.S. combat veterans treated with EFT, have seemed unbelievable from a talk therapy perspective. While more sophisticated (and more expensive) studies need to be done, the data continues to stack up in favor of EP.

Despite my own psychoanalytic/psychodynamic training (i.e., talk therapy), once I introduced EMDR then EFT into my practice some years ago, I was able to help patients overcome their fears and traumas more easily, quickly and completely. I still use EP in my practice or refer patients to EP practitioners while I focus on the more physiological aspects (diet, nutritional supplements, hormonal balancing, etc). I find the combination to be extremely useful: The brain functions better when it is biochemically balanced (and this works both ways, of course).

It is possible that energy psychology is following the path described by William James a century ago: "A new idea is first condemned as ridiculous and then dismissed as trivial, until finally it becomes what everybody knows."

For more information about energy psychology, check out The Association of Comprehensive Energy Psychology (ACEP) website. This international non-profit organization of licensed mental health professionals and allied energy health practitioners, dedicated to developing and applying energy psychology methods, will be holding their annual conference in beautiful San Diego in May. Its counterpart -- The Canadian Association for Integrative and Energy Therapies (CAIET) -- will be holding its annual conference in Toronto in October, where I'll be a speaker.
