Isaac moves east while impact lingers in Louisiana

NASHVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) - As the remnants of Hurricane Isaac moved east on Sunday, bringing with it a wet Labor Day holiday weekend, the storm's impact was still being felt in Louisiana, where more than a hundred thousand people were still without power.

Entergy, Louisiana's largest power provider, said about 160,000 of the Louisiana homes and businesses it serves remained without electricity, leaving them without air conditioning under sweltering temperatures.

The storm, which was downgraded from hurricane strength last week, is headed along the drought-stricken Ohio Valley, which is due to see heavy rains on Monday, the Labor Day holiday.

From the spine of the Appalachian Mountains on west, downpours and thunderstorms could disrupt outdoor holiday activities, especially Monday afternoon and early evening, said Carl Erickson, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.com.

"People might be able to sneak some plans in there, but they're going to have to watch the sky," Erickson said.

Storms are likely to continue in the northeast through the early part of the week.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Louisiana on Monday -- one day before the Democratic National Convention kicks off in Charlotte, North Carolina. The White House has said Obama will visit first responders and survey the damage from Hurricane Isaac.

Isaac was the first hurricane to strike the United States this year and it hit New Orleans almost exactly seven years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city, causing an estimated 1,800 deaths.

At least five deaths in Louisiana and two in neighboring Mississippi were blamed on Isaac and both states suffered from widespread flooding, authorities said.

Isaac was expected to be a mixed blessing for the drought-parched Midwest farm belt, since experts said its rains came too late for this season's crop of corn and most soybeans.

The worst drought in nearly half a century remains deeply entrenched across nearly two thirds of the United States.

Isaac's rains could help speed up pasture recovery, however, and get the U.S. winter wheat crop off to a good start.

Isaac lingered over New Orleans for the better part of two days, providing a first and successful test of the city's new $14.5 billion flood-control system assembled after Katrina. Areas outside those flood protections fared worse.

At least one levee was overtopped southwest of New Orleans, leaving some homes under 12 feet of water.

Temporary post ? will be replaced

First we took a bus to Highbury and Islington and from there the Overground to Richmond. The plan was to visit Orleans House Gallery and perhaps also Marble Hill House which is nearby.

Orleans House Gallery
Orleans House Gallery

However, when we arrived, we discovered that Orleans House was open every day of the week except? Monday. Perhaps we should have done our research a little better.

Never mind, we had our fall-back. Or so we thought. Unfortunately, it turned out that Marble Hill House is open to visitors only at the weekend. Strike two.

Nearby is a ferry that takes you across the Thames. The cost is ?1 per person and it is money well spent as it saves a long roundabout trek to a bridge. The ferry deposits you conveniently close to Ham House, which is where we went next.

Staircase, Ham House
Staircase, Ham House

We had visited Ham House, a 17th century house, before but were happy to visit it again. It was open, fortunately.

Ham House has extensive grounds beautifully laid out to resemble the original gardens. A project called the Garden of Reason is taking place. In this a number of sculptures and installations by relatively unknown? contemporary artists have been placed in the grounds. There was a free tour of these. Despite my scepticism about modern art, I went on the tour and did my best to treat the works seriously, hoping to learn something about modern art. Predictably, perhaps, my resolution was gradually eroded as we went round and finally crumbled completely.

Fortunately, the house itself soon restored my equilibrium and good humour. Photography is allowed (without flash). When we visited the house previously, there was scaffolding obscuring the fa?ade but today the outside was revealed in all its glory.

After our visit, we caught a bus to Richmond station and there boarded the train to Waterloo. Waterloo is next to the Southbank Centre (which we visited both yesterday and the day before) and in the Southbank Centre is one of our favourite restaurants, Canteen. So we repaired thither for supper before taking the bus back to the Angel.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The fright flick "The Possession" has scared up a No. 1 debut with $17.7 million from Friday to Sunday over the long Labor Day weekend.

The Lionsgate release led the last weekend of a fairly quiet season for Hollywood, with attendance down 4 percent from summer 2011, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Opening in second-place with $9.7 million was the Weinstein Co. bootlegging drama "Lawless," starring Shia LaBeouf.

"The Expendables 2" pulled in $8.8 million, falling to No. 3 after two weekends as the top draw at theaters.

Expanding to more theaters, the anti-Barack Obama documentary "2016: Obama's America" added to its haul as a surprise mini-hit leading up the presidential election. "Obama's America" was No. 9 with $5.1 million, raising its domestic total to $18.3 million.

Obama embarking on march to party convention

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? President Barack Obama is embarking on a four-day march through battleground states and the storm-battered Gulf Coast in the lead-up to his party's convention as he seeks to blunt any momentum picked up by Republican rival Mitt Romney.

As his party's faithful began streaming to Charlotte, N.C. for next week's convention, Obama was returning to Iowa on Saturday. For his part, Romney looked to capitalize on a newly energized Republican Party fresh from its convention in Tampa, Fla., with a rally in Cincinnati before joining running mate Paul Ryan later in the day in Jacksonville, Fla.

Both campaigns were crisscrossing the country as the race entered September, each day adding to the sense of urgency in a presidential contest that has remained tight since Romney sewed up the nomination in April. Both campaigns recognize that undecided elements of the electorate, including those in about eight key states, will begin to fully assess their options through the conventions and the upcoming debates in the weeks ahead.

"Hold us accountable. Listen to what we have to say," Romney said in a post-convention rally in Lakeland, Fla., on Friday. "I plan on winning in Florida. We love this country and we're taking it back."

Obama's run-up to the convention will take him through the battleground states of Iowa, Colorado, Ohio and Virginia, four states that he carried in 2008 but remain at the top of Romney's wish list. He was spending Saturday in suburban Des Moines and Sioux City, Iowa, before heading to Colorado for a Sunday event with college students at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

The Democratic Party's convention, which starts Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., will focus more on where voters want their lives to be in the next four years. Obama inherited an economy grappling with a sweeping recession and the pace of the sluggish recovery has become one of Obama's greatest impediments to re-election.

The coming days, capped by Obama's speech on Thursday night, will crystalize his re-election pitch: an economy built on ending tax cuts for the rich and putting more effort into education, energy, tax reform and debt reduction. He will call Romney a peddler of failed trickle-down ideas that will hurt the middle class and the needy.

Previewing the convention, Obama campaign aide Stephanie Cutter said the Charlotte gathering wouldn't be about rallying the base or leveling "petty attacks" but would instead focus on "what we need to do with the country to move us forward, not back."

"We don't need to reintroduce the president or reinvent him, as in the case with Mitt Romney," she said. "Instead, our convention will tell the story of the last four years, how the president made some tough choices to help a country and the economy recover."

Both sides hope to convey the aura of leadership.

Romney made a quick detour to rain-soaked Louisiana on Friday while Obama joined soldiers at Fort Bliss, Texas, to remind the nation that he ended the war in Iraq. Obama was scheduled to travel to Louisiana on Monday to inspect flood damage in a storm that marked the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's devastation.

Romney was capping his convention week in Ohio and Florida, the two most prominent states that remain up for grabs. The former Massachusetts governor's team said the Tampa, Fla., convention helped him present a clear contrast with Obama and showcase him as a viable alternative to the president on handling the economy.

"What Americans have seen over the last few days is a party and a Republican ticket absolutely committed to addressing the job crisis," said Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom. "You won't hear it from the Democrats in Charlotte next week. People have seen a diverse group of individuals who believe very deeply in the American free enterprise system. It's very different than the negative characterization the Democrats are trying to paint of this convention."

Television ratings for the final night of the Republican convention were down compared with four years ago. The Nielsen Co. said an estimated 30.3 million viewers watched Thursday night's coverage over 11 networks compared with more than 40 million over seven networks when John McCain delivered his acceptance speech in 2008.

Olympic champion Murray reaches last 16 at US Open

Olympic champion Andy Murray advanced to the fourth round of the US Open on Saturday with a 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) victory over 30th-seeded Spanish left-hander Feliciano Lopez.

British third seed Murray will next face the winner of a later match between American James Blake and 15th-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic.

Murray, four times a Grand Slam runner-up but still seeking his first major title, had lost only one set in six prior matches against Lopez but battled in heat and humidity to avoid being ousted, trailing in all three tie-breakers.

"It was a very tough match," Murray said. "Three tie-breakers, could have gone either way. He was up in all three of them. It was hot and humid. We played some good tennis, especially toward the ends of sets."

Murray's 250th career match victory on hardcourts, what he says is his favorite surface, came after three hours and 53 minutes when Murray won the final four points, the last of them on a netted Lopez backhand.

"This was the first match I had played in this humidity for a while so it was tough," Murray said. "I would like to be in slightly better form but these matches have helped with that."

With coach Ivan Lendl watching in stoic fashion, Murray won his 10th match in a row over a southpaw, having not lost to a lefty since Rafael Nadal beat him in last year's US Open semi-finals.

Murray took the first set but nearly faced a set point in the 10th game of the second set. Lopez raised his arm to ask for a replay-system review of a line call that would have, if successful, given him a crucial break chance.

But umpire Jake Garner denied the request, saying it had come too late even though it clearly had not, saying he had watched Lopez but seen no signal after his shot had been called out.

"You didn't watch me at all. You didn't see," Lopez fumed. "It was so clear. I challenged immediately. It's a very important point. You will see on TV."

Murray held and they battled into a tie-breaker in which Murray fell behind 4-1 only to capture six of the last seven points, including the final four to seize command of the match.

At 6-5, a Lopez cross-court backhand was called in but Murray asked for a replay and as he waited for it yelled to Garner, "Neither of you called that." Garner replied, "Yeah, I know. It's wide."

The replay system agreed moments later and Lopez miss-hit on the next point to hand Murray the set.

After exchanging breaks twice in the third set, Murray netted a forehand to give Lopez a 5-4 lead and the Spaniard held to force a fourth.

Murray saved a break point in the fifth game of the fourth set and Lopez rescued two in the eighth.

In the 11th game, Lopez had a break-point chance and a 23-shot rally ensued that saw the Spaniard roam all across his side of the court before finally netting a forehand, the crowd standing and cheering in appreciation.

In the tie-breaker, Lopez seized a 4-3 edge on a service winner but netted a backhand and sent a forehand wide before Murray's backhand winner set up match point.

The Evisceration of Tenure at Saint Louis University

This, from the?Chronicle of Higher Education?yesterday:

?Post-tenure review should be for the purposes of assisting faculty members in improving their performance,? says B. Robert Kreiser, associate secretary of the AAUP. ?But the policy that has been proposed would effectively eviscerate tenure as it?s understood at most institutions of higher learning.?

Unfortunately, that seems to be the goal.

One of the options being considered by Saint Louis University would include a process of revoking tenure? that is, moving the professor to a non-tenured position with the looming possibility of dismissal. And that, of course, would make tenure not tenure at all.

Real tenure would remain for, primarily, full professors in administrative positions.

The controversy over the proposed post-tenure-review policy at Saint Louis has been? muted, with many faculty members saying they were reluctant to discuss it. Some said they feared that administrators could use post-tenure review to get rid of tenured faculty members they don?t like.

Of course, the point of tenure is to keep that from happening, but who am I to say?

The article links to the AAUP page on post-tenure review, and I hope readers are clicking on it. They will find this:

Because post-tenure review is used to mean many things, it is important to define our understanding of the term. Lurking within the phrase are often two misconceptions: that tenured faculty are not already recurrently subject to a variety of forms of evaluation of their work, and that the presumption of merit that attaches to tenure should be periodically cast aside so that the faculty member must bear the burden of justifying retention. Neither assumption is true. ?

What post-tenure review typically adds to? long-standing practices is a formalized additional layer of review that, if it is not simply redundant, may differ in a number of respects: the frequency and comprehensiveness of the review, the degree of involvement by faculty peers, the use of self-evaluations, the articulation of performance objectives, the extent of constructive ?feedback,? the application of innovative standards and principles, and the magnitude of potential sanctions. At its most draconian, post-tenure review aims to reopen the question of tenure; at its most benign, it formalizes and systematizes long-standing practices. ?

Post-tenure review should not be undertaken for the purpose of dismissal. Other formal disciplinary procedures exist for that purpose. If they do not, they should be developed separately, following generally accepted procedures.

Tenure has been demonized in the public sphere as job protection forced on educational institutions by unions, as featherbedding for long-term employees. It is attacked to reduce the power and position of an independent professoriate, to bring education structures in line with top-down business ones.

That?s not what we need in education now, not what we ever needed, and not what we will need in the future.

Tenure is the linchpin of shared governance, and it is shared governance, not the business model, that has made American education the best in the world (don?t listen to those who claim ?failed? schools and?dysfunctional colleges?look, instead, at what American graduates are doing compared with those in the rest of the world).

Chinese man mails himself to his girlfriend and nearly suffocates

First a warning.

This romantic gesture by a Chinese man to his girlfriend described below may make women around the globe swoon.

To celebrate his girlfriend's birthday,?Hu Seng, from?Chongqing city, thought it would be a nice surprise if he mailed himself - yes, his physical self - to his girlfriend.

Undoubtedly, upon arrival he would pop out of the box and kiss her in front of friends who were in the know.

Things didn't work out so well.

After hiring courriers to deliver the box to his girlfriend, there was confusion as to her address and Seng found himself lost in the post, said Digital Spy.

What was expected to take 30 minutes, took three hours - Seng sealed in a box the entire time.

When he arrived, he was passed out in the box, nearly suffocated from a lack of oxygen in the container.

"I didn't realise it would take so long," Seng said, reported IoL News.

"I tried to make a hole in the cardboard but it was too thick and I didn't want to spoil the surprise by shouting."

Apparently the courrier company had no idea that Seng was in the box and said they would have refused to do it if they had known.

Levitra and the code of silence even with ... - Recreation and Sports

August 31st, 2012 by Leave a reply ?

Outside the US, there?s a trend to decentralize medical care. We?ve tended to centralize by producing major hospitals which assume control of the treatment for the most serious injuries and illnesses with a system that moves patients from local physician care to the highest authorities in each specialty. Other countries find this investment in major hospitals very expensive. The more people who fall ill, the greater the number of beds they take up and the more labor is required. But if people can be nursed in the community unless their conditions are life-threatening, you get a more efficient use of labor without the need to build expensive hospitals. So many other healthcare services are producing neighborhood clinics which send nurses and doctors out to the homes of people who are ill. This encourages family support networks and improves patient morale. This has been found particularly effective in offering support services and care when needed to the seniors. Older people tend to respond more quickly and make better recoveries when they are allowed to retain their independence.

Although nurses are moving more freely through local communities, there?s still a problem in identifying men with erectile dysfunction. Even when it?s obvious from their medical history that they probably have the problem, it?s impossible to get them to break the code of silence. It?s an admission that men still find deeply embarrassing. This produces the irony that, even with the best possible drug in the world, men will not open their mouths to ask for it. Levitra has been found particularly effective in cases where there?s nerve damage from diabetes and other medical situations in which dysfunction is probable.

The medical authorities are therefore introducing new training methods to help physicians, nurses and community workers to help men overcome the feelings of shame and guilt to ask for treatment. The evidence that resumption of sexual activity improves the quality of life makes this a high priority. Sadly, the US healthcare service resists moves to introduce preventive medicine. The idea we might also break the power of the large hospitals is currently unthinkable. Men in the US are therefore even less likely to ask their doctors for Levitra.
