Disentangling information from photons

ScienceDaily (July 12, 2012) ? Theoretical physicist Filippo Miatto and colleagues from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK, have found a new method of reliably assessing the information contained in photon pairs used for applications in cryptography and quantum computing. The findings, published in The European Physical Journal D, are so robust that they enable access to the information even when the measurements on photon pairs are imperfect.

The authors focused on photon pairs described as being in a state of quantum entanglement: i.e., made up of many superimposed pairs of states. This means that these photon pairs are intimately linked by common physical characteristics such as a spatial property called orbital angular momentum, which can display a different value for each superimposed state.

Miatto and his colleagues relied on a tool capable of decomposing the photon pairs' superimposed states onto the multiple dimensions of a Hilbert space, which is a virtual space described by mathematical equations. This approach allowed them to understand the level of the photon pairs' entanglement.

The authors showed that the higher the degree of entanglement, the more accessible the information that photon pairs carry. This means that generating entangled photon pairs with a sufficiently high dimension -- that is with a high enough number of decomposed photon states that can be measured -- could help reveal their information with great certainty.

As a result, even an imperfect measurement of photons' physical characteristics does not affect the amount of information that can be gained, as long as the level of entanglement was initially strong. These findings could lead to quantum information applications with greater resilience to errors and a higher information density coding per photon pair. They could also lead to cryptography applications where fewer photons carry more information about complex quantum encryption keys.

Graphene heals itself, powers our dreams and nightmares

Graphene heals itself

Slowly, but surely graphene is pushing our technological hopes, dreams and, yes, nightmares towards reality. The stuff is capable of extending battery life, generating electricity, powering high-speed data connections and super computer-worthy CPUs. It's water proof, stretchy, bendy and apparently self healing. (This space reserved for T-1000 reference.) Researchers at the University of Manchester discovered that, if you put a hole in a sheet of graphene, it simply stitches itself back together. This is thanks to carbon's tendency to latch on to other atoms, including its own, which can make the futuristic material difficult to work with, but gives it this highly unique quality. Thankfully, we're no where near self-healing robots. But, the discovery could lead to a simple method for molding it into almost any shape. Once pierced, the form of the mend is determined by the type of molecules introduced -- pure carbon simply regrows the perfect honeycomb structure, while a few foreign atoms can lead to "defects." Of course, if they're intentional and predictable, defects merely become "features." For more check out the source link.

Police: Teacher accused of abuse crashes in chase

A California teacher wanted on suspicion of child abuse led police on a chase that ended with him driving off the side of a highway. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.

LOS ANGELES -- A middle school gym teacher wanted on suspicion of child abuse told police he was suicidal before leading officers on a chase across southeast Los Angeles that ended with his?truck careening down an embankment and into a patio area outside a business, police say.

Police identified the?driver as 51-year-old Kip Richard Arnold. He had been trapped inside?a truck, which was flipped sideways next to an office building after the chase Tuesday, according to police. Firefighters and rescue team members extricated him and transported him to a hospital in an ambulance.

"He was able to answer some basic questions," Capt. Phil Schneider of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. "He was alert."

The Los Angeles Unified School District released a statement, saying school officials were cooperating with the police investigation.

"Officials of the (LAUSD) have been notified by the Bell Police Department of the arrest of Kip Arnold, a physical education teacher at Southeast Middle School, on suspicion of lewd behavior with a former student, and possibly additional victims.

"He has been with the District eight years. Past assignments include Nimitz Middle School, Gage Middle School and Orchard Academies 2B," according to the LAUSD statement.

Arnold had been under police surveillance on Tuesday. He was wanted on suspicion of child abuse allegedly involving a 16-year-old girl, police said.??

On Tuesday, when Arnold left his Lakewood residence in his vehicle, officers initiated a traffic stop. That's when he told officers he was suicidal and took off, police said.

The pursuit zipped through the Bell area to the 405 and 110 freeways before entering the Torrance area, according to police. Arnold?s truck crashed into the side of a semi-trailer truck but kept going, police say.

The driver headed uphill onto the Palos Verdes Peninsula, then crashed through a white three-rail fence and?plowed down?an embankment off Crenshaw Boulevard. The vehicle landed next to a commercial building near Indian Peak Road.

The crash occurred just feet from the office headquarters of a food distribution company called Dotta Foods, where employees would normally be outside in the area grilling food for lunch, according to Katia Francesconi, a sales and marketing employee with the business.

"They were lucky," Francesconi said of her coworkers.

The vehicle collided with the company's barbecue and some chairs, destroying them, before crashing into a tree that stopped the truck from hitting cars parked nearby.

Cutting daily sitting time to under three hours might extend life by two years

ScienceDaily (July 9, 2012) ? Restricting the amount of time spent seated every day to less than 3 hours might boost the life expectancy of US adults by an extra 2 years, indicates an analysis of published research in the online journal BMJ Open.

And cutting down TV viewing to less than 2 hours every day might extend life by almost 1.4 years, the findings suggest.

Several previous studies have linked extended periods spent sitting down and/or watching TV to poor health, such as diabetes and death from heart disease/stroke.

The researchers used data collected for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) for 2005/6 and 2009/10, to calculate the amount of time US adults spent watching TV and sitting down on a daily basis.

NHANES regularly surveys a large representative sample of the US population on various aspects of their health and lifestyle.

They trawled the research database MEDLINE, looking for published studies on sitting time and deaths from all causes, and pooled the different relative risk data from the five relevant studies, involving almost 167,000 adults. The database was then reanalysed, taking account of age and sex.

They combined these data and the NHANES figures to come up with a population attributable fraction (PAF) -- an estimate of the theoretical effects of a risk factor at a population, rather than an individual level -- to calculate the number of deaths associated with time spent sitting down.

The PAFs for deaths from all causes linked to sitting time and TV viewing were 27% and 19%, respectively.

The results of life table analyses indicates that cutting the amount of time spent sitting down every day to under three hours would add an extra two years to life expectancy.

Similarly, restricting time spent watching TV to under two hours daily would extend life expectancy by an extra 1.38 years.

The authors emphasise that their analysis assumes a causal association rather than proving that there is one. But they point to the evidence showing the detrimental effect of a sedentary lifestyle on health.

And they caution that their findings should not be interpreted as meaning that someone who leads a more sedentary lifestyle can expect to live two or 1.4 years less than someone who is more active.

"The results of this study indicate that extended sitting time and TV viewing may have the potential to reduce life expectancy in the USA," they write.

"Given that the results from objective monitoring of sedentary time in NHANES has indicated that adults spend an average of 55% of their day engaged in sedentary pursuits, a significant shift in behaviour change at the population level is required to make demonstrable improvements in life expectancy," they conclude.

Further research will be required before recommendations on safe levels of sedentary behaviour can be made, they add.

Huawei Ascend D1 now up for grabs in China, headed to Russia next month

Being related to that considerably powerful Ascend D Quad could spark some sort of a double-edged sword effect on Huawei's lesser-specced D1, but if all those cores the former has to offer mean nothing to those in China, the latter wouldn't be such a bad choice. In case you've forgotten -- unlike its beefier, quad-core-loaded brother -- this 4.5-inch (1280 x 720) Ascend D1's only sporting a dual-core, 1.5GHz TI OMAP CPU, which is paired next to 1GB of RAM and a tasty bite of Google's 4.0 treat. According to Huawei, the device is set to hit online shelves throughout the Great Wall starting today, with Russia being its next stop come August and "other markets to follow" sometime after. Be sure to pay the source below a visit if you're planning on grabbing one of these for yourself.

Common child illness linked to Cambodia killer

(AP) ? A deadly form of a common childhood illness has been linked to many of the mysterious child deaths in Cambodia that caused alarm after a cause could not immediately be determined.

The World Health Organization and Cambodian Health Ministry say lab tests have confirmed that a virulent strain of hand, foot and mouth disease, known as EV-71, is to blame for many of the 59 cases reviewed, including 52 deaths. The numbers were lowered from their initial report of 62 cases.

Last year, the disease sickened more than 110,000 people in Vietnam and killed 166, mostly children under 3.

The disease has been raging across Asia, and usually causes a telltale rash. WHO spokeswoman Aphaluck Bhatiasevi says rash was seen in only a few of the Cambodian cases.
