Use Direct Marketing to Target Customers for Your Auto Repair ...

Advertising in newspapers and commercials is broadly focused. The ability to narrow down the target audience further is limited. When spending marketing dollars in this environment, you are spending more money on people who are probably not interested in your service. If you could narrow your target to just those interested, you could save money and have a greater return in investment. ?

This is where direct marketing comes in. Direct mail comes in many forms. Brochures, marketing flyers, postcards, or even letters are all forms of direct marketing. Depending on your target audience, you might send out multiple forms. The benefit of direct mail advertising is that they are sent to specific people ? those who are the most likely to be interested in your service. By targeting different demographics, mailers are organized and more likely to catch their attention. The goal is that consumers will read the mailer and follow through with your call to action. ?

When targeting specific demographic audiences, you can make each mailer different. By creating different codes or call to actions, you?ll know which audience is most interested in your services, and how successful your mailers were. You can easily measure the rate of success and your ROI. ?

This is where hiring a direct mailing company may come in handy. These companies specialize in list management and have expert resources that have gathered data on all types of target markets.? For an auto repair business direct mail might be best targeted at newly relocated residents.? New residents might be more likely to be looking for an auto repair shop. Direct mail companies can also advise you on the types of mailings, number of repeat mailers required for your targeted demographic, coupons or free promotions to offer your audience. ?? ?

Using a direct mailing company like Mudlick Mail, can be beneficial to your auto repair service, especially if you aren?t sure where you want to get started.

Interventional Radiology now a primary specialty in medicine; ABMS recognizes unique IR skill set with the new Dual Primary Certificate in Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology

FAIRFAX, Va.The Society of Interventional Radiology hailed the Sept. 11 decision by the American Board of Medical Specialtiesthe organization that has oversight of the 24 recognized medical specialty boardsto approve the American Board of Radiology's application for a new Dual Primary Certificate in Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology. With this approval, ABMS and its member boards confirmed the benefit to patients of the unique interventional radiology skill set comprised of competency in diagnostic imaging, image-guided procedures and periprocedural patient care.

"Support for the Dual Certificate in Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology by ABMS is a seminal event in the history of interventional radiologyand one that will benefit future patients by providing well-trained minimally invasive image-guided specialists," said SIR President Marshall E. Hicks, M.D., FSIR, who represents the national society of nearly 5,000 doctors, scientists and allied health professionals dedicated to improving health care through minimally invasive treatments. "The Society of Interventional Radiology applauds ABR for its dedication and hard work in advancing the specialty and the interventional radiology skill set, a unique combination of interpretive and procedural skill, accompanied by corresponding clinical expertise," said Hicks, the head of the division of diagnostic imaging at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

"This is an important step in the formalization of the interventionalist's clinical role. Recognition of the interventional radiologist's imaging, technical and periprocedural patient care competencies speaks directly to the specialty's focus on patients, innovation and advanced image-guided techniques," said John A. Kaufman, M.D., FSIR, a past president of SIR and director of the Dotter Interventional Institute in Portland, Ore. "First and foremost, future patients will benefit from this," said Kaufman, who chaired the SIR/ABR task force that has been developing the certificate since 2005.

The new Dual Certificate in Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology will be the fourth primary certificate for ABR and the 37th overall in the United States. A primary certificate is different from a subspecialty certificate as it designates a unique and distinct area of medicine, rather than an area of focus within an existing specialty.

"Since the early 20th century, board certificationa form of professional self-regulationhas assured the public of the qualifications of medical professionals," said Gary J. Becker, M.D., FSIR, ABR executive director. "Only rarely does the house of medicine acknowledge the importance of a new primary specialty certificate in fulfilling these responsibilities. ABR supported the creation of this primary certificate based on the need to ensure that future trainees acquire the requisite combination of clinical, procedural and interpretive skills necessary for the safe and competent practice of interventional radiology. The interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology certificate ensures that board-certified interventional radiologists are trained and qualified to deliver the highest level of care available today, and it demands that this same quality be made available to all future patients," he added.

"ABR is pleased to offer this new certification and notes its importance to patients, the public and the profession. The addition of the interventional radiology/diagnostic radiology certificate to the other primary certificates offered by ABRDiagnostic Radiology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Physicsrounds out a full range of ABR primary certification services in diagnostic, therapeutic and image-guided procedures, as well as periprocedural clinical care," said ABR President James P. Borgstede, M.D. "I would like to acknowledge the vision, leadership and commitment to quality patient care of ABR past presidents N. Reed Dunnick, M.D., and Bruce G. Haffty, M.D., who helped to guide the application and approval process. Finally, ABR notes that a very positive and productive collaboration with SIR on this important endeavor made the new certificate possible," he added.

"The interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology certificate will help ensure that all patients in the country continue to receive high-quality, consistent, diagnostic, procedural and clinical interventional care," said Jeanne M. LaBerge, M.D., FSIR, an ABR trustee and interventional radiologist at the University of California, San Francisco. "The recent approval of the interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology certificate formalizes this belief and gives 'specialty' status to the field of interventional radiology while maintaining its intimate and necessary relation to diagnostic radiology," said Matthew A. Mauro, M.D., FSIR, an SIR past president and ABR trustee. "The elevation of interventional radiology to a 'specialty' level with its own distinct residency program places interventional radiology/diagnostic radiology on the same level as surgery, pediatrics and internal medicine in the ABMS hierarchy. This ABMS vote is much more than a superficial clerical actionit is one that initiates a formalized enhanced training program that will benefit patients across the country and serve as a model throughout the world," added Mauro, professor and chair, department of radiology, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

"Securing the interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology certificate took tremendous effort by many individuals and support from many societies," said Kaufman. Organizations that support the certificate besides ABR include the American College of Radiology, American Osteopathic College of Radiology, American Roentgen Ray Society, Association of Program Directors in Radiology, Association of Program Directors in Interventional Radiology, American Association for Women Radiologists, American Society of Neuroradiology, Association of University Radiologists, Coalition for Imaging and Bioengineering Research, Radiological Society of North America, Radiology Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, Society for Pediatric Radiology, Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments, Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery and Society of Vascular Medicine.

About the Society of Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiologists are physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. They offer the most in-depth knowledge of the least invasive treatments available coupled with diagnostic and clinical experience across all specialties. They use X-ray, MRI and other imaging to advance a catheter in the body, such as in an artery, to treat at the source of the disease internally. As the inventors of angioplasty and the catheter-delivered stent, which were first used in the legs to treat peripheral arterial disease, interventional radiologists pioneered minimally invasive modern medicine. Today, interventional oncology is a growing specialty area of interventional radiology. Interventional radiologists can deliver treatments for cancer directly to the tumor without significant side effects or damage to nearby normal tissue.

Many conditions that once required surgery can be treated less invasively by interventional radiologists. Interventional radiology treatments offer less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery. Visit www.SIRweb.org.

Jenner shared implant surgery to help others

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Season seven of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" is coming to an end, and as is often the case for the tell-all reality show, it's doing so with an up close, personal look at some of the stars.

Last week's penultimate episode for the season showcased Kardashian family matriarch Kris Jenner as she shared her plans to get her breast implants replaced. Cameras even followed her into the hospital.

"I thought it was such a great idea to film that," Jenner told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie Tuesday morning. "The reason I went in and did that was because I had had my implants in for 152 years -- you know, a long time, way longer than their shelf life."

Rather than looking at it the decision to air the pre-surgery footage as TMI, she considers it more of a PSA.

"You know, take them out and change them after 10 years," Jenner urged all woman with implants. "That was a big message and important for me to sort of put out there in a comical way. You know, I made fun of myself. Because at my age, you're over 50 -- like, when do you stop? But it was so important, health-wise, to remind women to check your expiration date because it's a health risk."

So that footage was for the greater good. But what about all of the other times the family shared it all for the boob tube, such as those recent family therapy sessions?

"Sometimes I watch back, and I think, 'Wow, that's kind of crazy' or 'Hard to watch.'"

But ultimately, she just thinks that it's all worthwhile. After all, her job lets her work with her family, and according to the "momager," that's all that really matters.

As for the family's latest reveals, which in addition to Jenner's breast augmentation surgery, included Khloe Kardashian's concerns about her starting a family and a trip to a fertility specialist, viewers will learn how everything worked out in the upcoming season-ender.

The season finale of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" airs Sunday night at 9 p.m. on E!

Share your thoughts about the family's tell-all ways on our Facebook page.

Simon Cowell: Britney Spears Is "Quite Mean" on 'X Factor'

Simon Cowell thinks fans of The X Factor should prepare themselves for a tougher slate of judges than they were used to last year. In particular, new judges Britney Spears and Demi Lovato -- who join Cowell and music producer L.A. Reid -- won't be all sweetness and light when the show premieres (8 p.m. ET this Wednesday on Fox).

Enough wind to power global energy demand: New research examines limits, climate consequences

ScienceDaily (Sep. 9, 2012) ? There is enough energy available in winds to meet all of the world's demand. Atmospheric turbines that convert steadier and faster high-altitude winds into energy could generate even more power than ground- and ocean-based units. New research from Carnegie's Ken Caldeira examines the limits of the amount of power that could be harvested from winds, as well as the effects high-altitude wind power could have on the climate as a whole.

Their work is published September 9 by Nature Climate Change.

Led by Kate Marvel of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, who began this research at Carnegie, the team used models to quantify the amount of power that could be generated from both surface and atmospheric winds. Surface winds were defined as those that can be accessed by turbines supported by towers on land or rising out of the sea. High-altitude winds were defined as those that can be accessed by technology merging turbines and kites. The study looked only at the geophysical limitations of these techniques, not technical or economic factors.

Turbines create drag, or resistance, which removes momentum from the winds and tends to slow them. As the number of wind turbines increase, the amount of energy that is extracted increases. But at some point, the winds would be slowed so much that adding more turbines will not generate more electricity. This study focused on finding the point at which energy extraction is highest.

Using models, the team was able to determine that more than 400 terrawatts of power could be extracted from surface winds and more than 1,800 terrawatts could be generated by winds extracted throughout the atmosphere.

Today, civilization uses about 18 TW of power. Near-surface winds could provide more than 20 times today's global power demand and wind turbines on kites could potentially capture 100 times the current global power demand.

At maximum levels of power extraction, there would be substantial climate effects to wind harvesting. But the study found that the climate effects of extracting wind energy at the level of current global demand would be small, as long as the turbines were spread out and not clustered in just a few regions. At the level of global energy demand, wind turbines might affect surface temperatures by about 0.1 degree Celsius and affect precipitation by about 1%. Overall, the environmental impacts would not be substantial.

"Looking at the big picture, it is more likely that economic, technological or political factors will determine the growth of wind power around the world, rather than geophysical limitations," Caldeira said.

First look at structure of vital molecule

ScienceDaily (Sep. 7, 2012) ? Molybdenum is an essential metal required in all living beings from bacteria to plants to humans. But as vital as this metal is, no one understood the importance of the structure of a vital molecule that interacts with molybdenum until the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry's Joel Weiner and his team jumped on the case.

Molybdenum plays critical roles in human health. It does not act alone but is found attached to certain proteins, called molybdenum enzymes, by a very large organic molecule. The organic molecule that holds the molybdenum in place in a protein is extraordinarily complex -- and "expensive" for the cell to make. But the structure of this molecule should make sense to scientists now, thanks to Weiner and his research team.

For starters, the research group found that the molecule occurs in nature in two forms based on their appearance -- flat or distorted. Weiner's team was able to show that the distorted form and flat form have very different functions. The distorted molecule plays a role in the transfer of electrons to the molybdenum, whereas the flat molecule prepares and co-ordinates positioning of the enzyme so it can be part of a biochemical reaction.

"This is important because molybdenum is so essential throughout biology," said Weiner. "We need to understand why the cell goes to all this trouble."

The distorted form is found in proteins involved in metabolic, respiratory and cardiac diseases. The flat form occurs in a protein required for brain development, and defects in this protein cause death in infancy. Understanding of this flat form could help lead to treatment of this defect.

It all started for Weiner and his research group in the Department of Biochemistry about three years ago. Although scientists worldwide had known the overall structure of molybdenum in proteins for many years, no one understood why it is so complicated. It was a summer student, Matthew Solomonson, who noticed that one of the structures holding molybdenum was very flat while the other group was distorted. As curiosity-based research goes, the summer student and Weiner's research team wondered if it was significant. The answer is yes.

"When you bring in a new student it's really good because they have a fresh way of looking at things," says Weiner of Solomonson who is now a grad student at the University of British Columbia.

"This discovery is a major one for my lab and will have a huge impact on molybdenum biochemistry research."

Now the team will use protein-engineering techniques to change the protein environment around the molybdenum.

"This is a critical next step," said Weiner. "We hope to finally start understanding the chemistry of these enzymes at atomic resolution, and to modulate their activities to better understand human disease and explore potential biotechnology and biomedical applications."

This work is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
